While birding the muggy High Line Canal Trail (along Orchard Rd.) this morning in Centennial, I spotted a flycatcher that I believe was a Great Crested Flycatcher. I had rather brief looks at the bird, which had the appropriately reddishness in its tail and, to my eyes, far too much brightness and yellow in its chest and belly -- and far too much grayness in its face and throat -- to be an Ash-throated Flycatcher, (though I initially reported it on eBird as such, since the app didn't pull up Great Crested as an option and I was without a field guide and internet access to check photos).I also believe I heard the bird vocalize once -- which is what initially caught my attention.
No photos, unfortunately, because of all days to do this, I brought my camera but without its SD card.I'd lost the bird before I'd even reported it. An effort at relocating it failed. I'm pessimistic about the possibility of relocating this bird. The Canal Trail here is dense and the riparian corridor rather endless. It's also bisected by the Little Dry Creek, which is even denser in places and inaccessible in many places. But if one were interested in looking for it, I'd recommend exploring the High Line from E. Long Road to E. Orchard, and the Little Dry Creek from where it crosses the canal to Colorado. (This a rather confusing portion of street crossing and trails, so good luck.)If someone does find it, please let me know by email. I'd love to see this bird again.- Jared Del RossoCentennial, CO
