[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir birds 1/2

Kara Carragher and I birded around Pueblo Reservoir today, and other places in Pueblo.  We started around 11am, to let things warm up and the roads to get less snowy.  As usual, for early January, there were other birders around today as well.

The highlights around Pueblo Reservoir today for us:
Long-tailed Duck - 1
Barrow's Goldeneye - 1 or 2 males, saw them at two locations
Red-throated Loon - 1
Pacific Loon - 1
Common Loon - 5
Red-necked Grebe - 2
Clark's Grebe - 1
lots of Eared Grebes and some Horned Grebes (most of these are near the dam, while the Eareds around in the middle of the reservoir, mostly back west)
American White Pelican - 4
Double-crested Cormorant - 1
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 at least
Bonaparte's Gull - many still
California Gull - 1
Greater Scaup - 5
Ruddy Duck - 4
Rough-legged Hawk - 1 (usually not regular around here, this year, they are around)
Rock Wren - 1
Mountain Bluebirds are around
Other people saw other things.
I know there is still at least one adult Short-billed Gull around, maybe not seen today, though seen this year already.

We tried to find Chestnut-sided Warblers at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Pueblo (HARP), near Main Street (when it warmed up some), and didn't find any, did see two Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, which sometimes the warblers hang out with.  The temperature was below 0 in downtown Pueblo last night, so the rare warblers may not have survived the night.

Even though we started at 11am, we ended up with around 75 bird species around Pueblo today.

Good luck to the DFO field trip tomorrow, there's plenty of birds on the reservoir to scope out.  The ponds around Valco, that were open as recently as yesterday, have mostly froze over.  I won't be able to be around the Reservoir and Pueblo tomorrow, a Christmas Bird Count up in Westcliffe tomorrow.
