Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak possible injury (Huerfano Co)

I was fortunate to see the yellow grosbeak at around 5:30pm today.  He flew in for a few minutes to eat some seed put out on the ground to the left of the deck below the feeder.  He limped when he needed to adjust his position, and often kept his right foot off of the ground.  It does indeed appear to be injured.  I wonder if this would normally prevent him from mating?  Would the ladies view him as unfit?  Not that there are any other yellow grosbeaks this far north!

I was there today at around 3:00pm, and took pictures of the neck and leg specifically. We thought at first that the stuff on the neck was jelly that had been knocked down to the ground earlier. However, the area around its leg does not appear to be the jelly. It did appear at times that it was favoring that leg. We all hoped that maybe it was the jelly, and it was very sticky, and bothering the bird. The owners said they would keep a close watch.
Sorry, my photos aren't ready yet.

Carolyn Spidle posted photos from today at ~1:30 that show what appears to be blood around the Yellow Grosbeak's right leg. Can anyone confirm this is an injury? Thanks.

The Yellow Grosbeak continues to be seen today in Huerfano County, with many birders seeing it.  Viewing is open until 7pm today.

Tomorrow, viewing will be open from NOON to 7pm.  Don't plan to come before then.  If anything changes, we'll let you know.
