[cobirds] Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park

CoBirders,

A week ago, several birders recorded Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park (via eBird). Unless you had alerts set for Arapahoe County or Colorado, you may not have seen the reports.

I went out this morning and found at least one (although some of the prior reports reported more). The individual I saw was just east (50 feet or so) of the Lone Tree Pond at the south-west end of the park. It was perched on some mullen in a patch of rabbit bush. It was clearly a bobolink — gold patch on the back of the neck and upper shoulders, white on the wings. Much smaller than the numerous red-winged blackbirds and grackles (including Great-tailed). (This area is near where the Dickcissels were found last year, but to the south by several hundred yards).

According to eBird, bobolinks are "rare" in the park, having been reported in only four individual weeks in the last 10 years (the second and third weeks of May, and the second and fourth in June).

Happy birding!
