[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Station Report, October 8 and 9

Yesterday (Thursday, October 8) was so crazy fun and interesting that I didn't get a report done! So I'll start with that:

On the first run of the day we had a Winter Wren, the first one caught since 2012.  It was great to reach into the bag thinking HOWR and pull out this cutie with the funny little tail.

Then, two runs later, Charlie Chase came back with the Red-tailed Hawk that had been terrorizing our songbirds for the past few days.  It was last seen the day before (Wed), perched on one of the aluminum poles that holds up the nets.  (The difference in size between this relative monster and the WIWR and the 6 or so Ruby-crowned Kinglets we'd just banded was astounding.)  We were particularly excited because it had a band, although our excitement is currently tempered because there seems to be some issue with the band and its number.  We will keep you posted as we learn more about where this bird was banded and when.

If that wasn't enough, we then caught our second Nashville Warbler, our second Field Sparrow, and two more Brown Creepers.   We also caught a European Starling, which made more noise and had more personality than every other bird caught this morning.  And a bunch of other stuff totaling 53 new birds:

Today (Friday, October 9) was much more typical of the past week or so, with only 22 new birds caught.  Highlights today included a lovely Blue-headed Vireo and a Song Sparrow that we banded on exactly the same day last year.  Here's the breakdown of the new captures:
