[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Grand Valley Audubon Society, 9/30/19

Today's wind brought with it a few fewer birds, but luckily some of them were good ones!  Today's 9 birds of 6 species included two that were first-of-season birds.

Warbling Vireo 1 (FOS)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Swainson's Thrush 1 (FOS)
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 4
White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain) 1
Western Scrub-jay 1

We are out here every weekday until Oct 11 - feel free to stop by, the earlier the better!  We are closing these days at around 11:00 (depending on weather) but it's best to stop by before 9:30.  Hope to see you there!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/30/19

Fittingly, the last day of what's been a warm and windy month was warm and windy. We enjoyed about an hour of nice conditions this morning before the south breeze picked up, and we had to close most of our nets by 9:00. Not too many birds turned up as a result: 13 newly banded individuals, 1 recapture, and 6 total species.

The morning's highlight was another Sharp-shinned Hawk, a hatch-year female that made for a nice contrast to last week's much smaller male. Otherwise, we noted a decent number of Hermit Thrushes, Kinglets, and Yellow-rumped Warblers around, but most of them were among the tall cottonwoods on the more-protected north side of the banding station area where we don't have nets set up. Here's hoping they'll turn up among the nets tomorrow.

Another interesting capture was a male Ruby-crowned Kinglet with yellow-orange crown feathers rather than the typical scarlet/ruby color. This is a relatively rare color variation found in under 10% of male kinglets!

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 6
Hermit Thrush 2
Gray Catbird 1 + 1 recapture
Spotted Towhee 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Tomorrow we'll be operating nets from 6:50–11:50 AM on Monday, and from 7:00 AM––Noon the remaining days––weather permitting. Come visit!

[cobirds] County Road 124 Pond Update [Weld]

Hi all

The Weld CR 124 pond is drawing down and offers nice shorebird habitat--and birds!  Did not walk into Weld CR 122 (.5m west of Weld CR 75/122) but suspect same conditions there. Weld CR 116 playa is full of water, no shoreline and two shovelers.
  • Wilson's Snipe - 7
  • Long-billed Dowitcher - 15
  • Greater Yellowlegs - 6+
  • Least Sandpiper - 2
  • Loads of ducks, some geese
I did most of travel on county roads north of Pawnee Buttes to WY border ...
  • Ferruginous Hawk - 3
  • Swainson's Hawk - 6
  • Red-tailed Hawk - 2
  • Prairie Falcon - 3
  • Tons of Vesper Sparrow, meadowlarks and horned larks
  • Some Lark, White-crowned, and Chipping Sparrow
  • Other interesting bird was Yellow-headed Blackbird - 2 hanging out with flock of Red-wingeds in the "middle of nowhere"
Other odd novelties were a small, looks to be a working, Zion Church on Weld CRs 124/111 in the "middle of nowhere" with houses/ranches not to be found in vicinity. Also, nearby was a four-story what looked to be a fire lookout perched in middle of prairie.

Beautiful drive ...

Thanks, Gary Lefko, Nunn

[cobirds] Hooded warbler Arapaho county

Hooded warbler was seen in the thickets across the stream at 39.577202, -104.982320.
It is off the gravel trail that goes from Mineral to the west on Lee Gulch trail. About 50 yards in there is a dead tree with a limb that comes straight out then goes straight up at a 90 degree angle.
Birders were Claire Montour and myself.

Grant- it was shortly after you left, closer to Mineral
Many thanks to Santi Tabares who originally spotted the bird.
The most amazing birds have been found lately in areas that I've never even birded before! It was a lifer for me. Thanks

The hooded warbler is still in the same spot as of this morning at 10:30am.  I got a brief glimpse of him in the middle of the thicket on the south side of the stream.  When you are sitting in the clearing on the north side of the stream, the thicket  is upstream on the south side. He was very deep in the thicket and hard to see, but I got a really good brief glimpse of his head.

[cobirds] Nuthatch behavior, Boulder county

I sat in a forest west of Nederland for four hours today as I played the fiddle for families walking through an "enchanted forest ". It was a fundraiser for a Nederland ecology/nature center that is going to be built there.
I enjoyed the wildlife and bemoaned the fact that I hadn't brought my binoculars. Nonetheless, I enjoyed being "forced " to sit for 4 hours, time to let me watch the wildlife at work.
Specifically, I watched as a chipmunk stored his seed under a small flat rock. A short while later, a red breasted nuthatch came and stole his stash. The chipmunk came back a while later with his cheek pouches full and stored a new batch of seeds. Soon after that a white breasted nuthatch came and stole the whole stash.
Although it was quite the score for the birds, I do hope the chipmunk figures it out and gets to store enough for winter!
It was a beautiful day!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Grand Valley Audubon Society, 9/28/19

Today's public banding day went well, with most visitors arriving early enough to see plenty of birds.  We ended up banding 13 new birds and 5 recaptures, including one return from a previous season.  For some reason, Spotted Towhees came out in force today and we ended up with six.  We also got one new species, an Audubon's Warbler.  Though we were worried about high winds, the weather held out until around 11.

Audubon's Warbler 1 (FOS)
Juniper Titmouse 1
White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 6 (plus two banded this season)
Spotted Towhee 5 (plus one return from a previous season)
Bewick's Wren 1 bird banded this season
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 bird banded this season

I'm banding at Connected Lakes State Park every M-F until October 11th!  If you would like to see some birds feel free to stop by between 7:30 and 11:00, the earlier the better.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/28/19

The weather today truly felt like fall for the first time, but unfortunately, that made it a little harder for us to catch birds. Drizzle postponed our net opening by an hour, and even after that, damp, cloudy, and cool conditions persisted for the remainder of the morning. While I appreciated the cooler temps, there weren't many birds to show for it, with 13 newly banded birds, 1 recapture, and 6 species.

There were a few interesting captures though. These included our first Red-naped Sapsucker of the season, and the 10th fall banding record for the species here. The sapsucker also had the honor of being the 50th species banded this season at Chico. We also had a Red-eyed Vireo––our 3rd capture of the season of the species, more than any previous fall.

Today's summary:

Wilson's Warbler 5
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Cassin's Vireo 1
Hermit Thrush 2 + 1 recapture
Red-naped Sapsucker 1 (FOS)

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. Next week is our last week of the season, and we'll be operating nets from 6:50–11:50 AM on Monday and Tuesday, and from 7:00 AM––Noon the remaining days. Come visit!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/28/19

Well today was quite windy from the start. We were only able to open a handful of the nets due to high winds, and had to close them all at around 9:30. There were lots of warblers and kinglets flitting around the willows and it may have been a busy morning if not for the wind! As it was, we only banded 6 birds for the day, and had 2 recaptures. Here are the newly banded birds:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 1
Orange-crowned Warbler: 1
Yellow-rumped 'Audubon's' Warbler: 3
Spotted Towhee: 1

PLEASE NOTE the change in our schedule - we are now opening nets at 7:40 (an hour later) and should have birds back at the station by 8:20. We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 13. We will close nets most days at 11:40, although we are closing earlier as needed due to the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

Re: [cobirds] Hooded Warbler

The hooded warbler is still in the same spot as of this morning at 10:30am.  I got a brief glimpse of him in the middle of the thicket on the south side of the stream.  When you are sitting in the clearing on the north side of the stream, the thicket  is upstream on the south side. He was very deep in the thicket and hard to see, but I got a really good brief glimpse of his head.

The Hooded Warbler is still here this morning. I saw him shortly after 10 am. Following the coordinates shared by Greg Goodrich. Same exact area near the ground near very bottom of gulch. Sun lite and seen well.

[cobirds] CU Birding Club - Boulder Goshawk

Hello all,

The newly formed CU-Boulder Birding Club made its inaugural outing this morning to Walden and Sawhill Ponds in Boulder. Attendees were Will Anderson, Paige Scatena, Jared Ganeles, Cole Sites, and me (the club's faculty sponsor). We had a nice morning, finding 38 species. The undisputed highlight was a juvenile Northern Goshawk that soared and flapped high over our heads for several minutes. Cole got some nice pictures that should show up on eBird at some point soon.

We heard from a couple other birders that a Sora was walking around in the open on the northwesternmost pond at Sawhill (the one with the Osprey platform). We didn't see it. There were two Great Horned Owls perched in trees along the Sawhill Ponds trail at different points west of the parking lot.

Good birding,

Nathan Pieplow
