[A report from Boulder County, Tues., May 7]
-- Okay, so I was out on my morning death run with Hannah Lightspeed Floyd (I've come to realize that she's both preventing me from having a heart attack and going to cause me to have a heart attack), basically just not trying to collapse, when what should we hear but a loudly broadcasting Clay-colored Sparrow near Waneka Lake, eastern Boulder County. But of course! Because of the drizzle, low cloud cover, and upslope flow. It's all spelled out here:

Say, something else, if I may, about content at The ABA Blog (where that Front Range Clay-colored Sparrow commentary appeared). We've started up a "How to Know the Birds" column that, so far, has dealt exclusively with Colorado birds. (Shush! Don't let the rest of the world know.) The first seven entries: Northern Cardinal (Prowers County), American Crow (Boulder County), American Dipper (Boulder County), Sagebrush Sparrow (Alamosa County), Northern Shoveler (Boulder County), Western Meadowlark (Boulder County), and this morning's entry, Swainson's Hawk (Boulder County). One other thing: Hannah yesterday saw a bird near Waneka Lake that seems like a good match to an alternate adult male Southern Red Bishop, Euplectes orix. Um, did someone lose one? In any event, might not be a bad idea to be on the lookout for this bird, certainly one of the most spectacular songbirds in my experience.
Alrighty, enjoy the good rain and good birding these next few days!
