This is the Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, March 5, sponsored by Denver Field Ornithologists.

 

Observers have been diligent in reporting sightings and updates on CoBirds. Thanks!

Rare, out of place and out of season species include:

 

Trumpeter Swan (*Mesa, Pueblo)

Tundra Swan (Prowers)

Long-tailed Duck (Larimer, Pueblo)

Glaucous-winged Gull (Arapahoe)

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Denver)

Winter Wren (Jefferson ,Pueblo)

Varied Thrush (*Boulder)

Gray-crowned and Black Rosy-Finches (El Paso )

Chestnut-collared Longspur (El Paso)

Field Sparrow (El Paso)

Fox Sparrow (Red) (*Jefferson)

Golden-crowned Sparrow (*El Paso)

Northern Cardinal (Larimer)

Rusty Blackbird (*Denver)

Pine Warbler (Larimer)

 

Gull species: several winter/very early spring gulls are being seen, primarily in Pueblo, Larimer, Arapahoe and Adams Counties (e.g. Iceland Gull (Thayer's), Glaucous Gull, California Gull, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Great Black-backed Gull).

 ARAPAHOE COUNTY:

—On February 27 a Glaucous-winged Gull was reported at Aurora Reservoir. First report on Jan 12 by Steve Mlodinow.


BOULDER COUNTY:

—On March 3 a Varied Thrush was reported on Bosque Ct in Boulder. First report on Jan 23  by Ernest Crvich.


DENVER COUNTY:

—On March 4 (3) Rusty Blackbirds were reported at First Creek at Denver Open Space.  First report in January.

—On March 2 a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was reported at Rocky Mountain Lake Park.  First report in January.

 

EL PASO COUNTY:

—On March 4 a Golden-crowned Sparrow was reported at Cheyenne Mountain SP near the Limekiln trailhead shelter area by Tyler Stewart.

On March 3 the overwintering Field Sparrow continues at Red Rock Canyon Open Space.

—On March 2 the Rosy-Finch flock including Gray-crowned and Black continues at Rainbow Gulch Trail, Rampart Range Reservoir.  First report Dec 2018.

—On February 26 a Chestnut-collared Longspur was reported in Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) by David Tonnessen .

 JEFFERSON COUNTY:

—On March 2 the overwintering Winter Wren continues at the Bear Creek Greenbelt, S Kipling Parkway to S Wadsworth Blvd. First report in January.

—On March 2 the overwintering Fox Sparrow (Red) continues at Red Rock Trading Post.


 LARIMER COUNTY:

On February 26 a Pine Warbler was reported in Fort Collins south of E Harmony Rd and east of S Lemay Ave. First report on February 6 by Nick Komar.

—ON February 26 a Long-tailed Duck was reported on Firestone Gravel Pits ( view from road ) by Steven Mlodinow.On February 28 a Long-tailed Duck was reported at Fossil Creek Reservoir & Regional Open Space.  First report on Feb 16 by David Farmer.

—There has been a (f) Northern Cardinal visiting the feeders at the home of Steve Martin SW of Wellington since July. Email for current status and directions: falconridge AT cowisp.net. Last reported on March 1.


MESA COUNTY:

—On March 4 (2) Trumpeter Swans were reported at Highline Lake State Park.  First report on Feb 9 by Glenn Pearson.


PROWERS COUNTY:

—On March 1 a Tundra Swan was reported in Lamar at North Gateway Park by Tony Leukering . 


PUEBLO COUNTY:

On March 3 (2) Trumpeter Swans were reported at Valco Ponds SWA.  There have been 1-2 Swans reported over the past few weeks, moving between locations at Pueblo Reservoir, the Nature and Raptor Center of Pueblo, Rock Canyon Rd. in Pueblo, Mosquito Alley, and Valco Ponds SWA.

On February 26 the overwintering Winter Wren continues at Valco Ponds SWA.Note, a Great Black-backed Gull, "Murray" is often reported at Pueblo Reservoir, where it has wintered for many years.
