[cobirds] FOS Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Canon City

I spotted our first of the season Harlan's Hawk today in a tree near the Arkansas River.  I got several good photos of it that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog https://birdsandnature.blogspot.com.

[cobirds] Tundra Swan at John Martin Reservoir (Bent County)

Birders,

Today, I found and photographed this immature Tundra Swan on the west end of John Martin Reservoir. Immature swans can be tricky to identify. Note the extensive amount of pink on the bill, fading to black at the base of the bill, and eye not connecting with black on the bill. While bill shape is more straightforward on adults, I always have a tough time with the shape of the bills on immature swans.

A reminder for far-flung birders. The John Martin CBC will take place on Monday, December 17th. We schedule it for weekdays to minimize hunter interference and conflict with counts in populated areas, and as early in the season as possible to (theoretically) avoid open water freezing over.

Respectfully,

Duane Nelson

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County 11/30

Here are the highlights:

Yellow-billed Loon - 1 juvenile, also seen by John Drummond and Bill Maynard
Pacific Loon - 1, all of us saw it
Red-necked Grebe - 1, only me
Common Loon - 2, all of us saw them
Palm Warbler - 2, all of us saw them
Great Black-backed Gull - 1 adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 or more adults
Iceland (Thayer's) Gull - 1 juvenile
Bonaparte's Gulls -- many many

I will not be at Pueblo Reservoir tomorrow, already have plans for other things.

Good luck,

[cobirds] Red Fox Sparrow, Red Rocks Park, Jefferson county

Dan and I spread food at Red Rocks trading post this morning. The cupboard had been bare, so it took a bit of time for the usual denizens to drop in. We were ultimately rewarded with brief but good looks at a (Red) Fox Sparrow.

[cobirds] YELLOW-BILLED LOON at Pueblo Res., 11/30

There's a YELLOW-BILLED LOON swimming off the South East side of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County this morning.  There are gulls feeding near it.  The bird is a big loon, light brown in color, light face, yellow large bill, head holding the bill in an up-turned fashion.  Hopefully it sticks around for a while, like through Dec 15th.

John, I want you to know that I did not take offense to your post, and I definitely appreciate your concern for the owls. You are certainly right that we probably shouldn't give specific details about roosting locations on a public list serve like this. Thank you for reminding everybody of the ethical way to go about owling. Just for the record, I probably could have worded my post better - I don't want anyone to approach the owls closely enough to make them leave their daytime roost. Maybe it would be better just to drive along the road and view from the car, that way the owls have more privacy.

[cobirds] Littleton warbler flock, Arapahoe 11/29

Today near noon I was checking an area in the South Park condo development along West Long Avenue in Littleton, near Long x Mineral. There are many trees in this development, with pines being quite numerous. So I was thinking maybe warblers. I was checking along the paths in the development and found it very quiet. But pishing here and there as I went, an Audubon's Yellow-rumped flew in, followed quickly by more and then there were 5 of them, and then 7, and then at least 12 Yellow-rumpeds were all around. I could count them as they flew over between trees. Eleven were Audubon's and one was Myrtle. Then with them there was a Palm Warbler! And after a little while a Pine Warbler flew into a pine near the yellow-rumped activity, remaining for a minute at most before flying out of view. And a Ruby-crowned Kinglet was with the flock. I don't recall encountering an actual warbler flock in late fall round these parts.

[cobirds] Re: Long-Eared Owls/Wellington

Eric, My initial reading of the post by Joe gave me the impression he was telling her to walk among the trees to flush them. I reread it and I can see why you read it differently. I went on a bird trip a couple of years ago and the leader indeed had us walk among trees to flush the owls. This was at Barr Lake. I had never heard of such a thing and could not believe people do it. I agree, keep owl talk private and please don't flush them.

Natalie,
I think that your best bet would be to walk along that row of juniper trees that runs along the south side of CR60, just west of the parking area.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Long-Eared Owls/Wellington

For the record, I did not at all interpret the earlier message as suggesting flushing. I understood that he was suggesting walking along the road and NOT among the trees precisely to avoid (or at least minimize) disturbance. But, maybe I'm wrong.

I would agree however that future requests for information on finding owls in particular locales are ideally made by asking for off-line (directly personal) responses.

[cobirds] Re: Long-Eared Owls/Wellington

The moderator of this list serve should delete this post immediately. People: owls are NOT to be flushed on purpose. I personally don't think their locations should even be revealed publicly, but others don't go that far. I hope we can agree that Advising anyone to flush an owl is crossing an ethical line.

I hope the posters will learn from this.
