Fwd: [cobirds] Dickcissel continues, Jefferson

I bumped into Tim Smart, and we easily found the singing Dickcissel discovered and reported recently by 

Eric DeFonso on COBirds. Thanks, Eric!

Directions (same as Eric's):

From the Golden-Boulder highway (Hwy 93), drive west on Hwy 72 toward Coal Creek Canyon.

Before you reach the mouth of the canyon, turn right and go north on Plainview Road.

Go about 1.1 miles and watch for a narrow gully on the right, where there is a parking lot with signs

mentioning the various activities one should engage in there. Walk east along a faint two-track from that lot.

We heard the Dickcissel singing from the parking lot, and it sang from a lone cottonwood tree in the 

gully and east of there down toward the fence, which seems to be the open space boundary. 

We did not see or hear other Dickcissels, but it's good habitat for nesting and could be checked from time to time.

Dickcissel has eluded me in Jeffco, so I really appreciate Eric's efforts.

Vesper Sparrows were plentiful, and we found Song and Grasshopper Sparrows &

Blue Grosbeak. It was birdiest where the gully crossed under the fence. The place is a natural rock garden

and a good stroll, not spoiled by playing golf or being alarmed by a rattlesnake.

Note that if you drive farther north on Plainview Road, you enter Boulder County.

Hi folks,

The dickcissel on Plainview Road in Jefferson County is singing as I type this. The bird is in a slightly different location from before, perched on a solitary Cottonwood down a drainage east of Plainview Road (downhill), maybe about a mile from Highway 72.

Also singing is grasshopper sparrow, very close to the road
