Re: [cobirds] Digest for cobirds@googlegroups.com - 11 updates in 9 topics

Our first mountain bluebirds of the season!  Many have undoubtedly seen some, but we haven't yet.   Little Horseshoe Park in Rocky Mountain NP, about 4:00 PM on March 14. Skies partly cloudy, temperature about 50 degrees F.  We observed at least 2 pairs.    They were eating something on the ground, we assumed grubs or ground-dwelling insects.

New area bird for me, the eye ring was distinctive and it had the usual flycatcher habit of moving short distances from the creek bed back and forth to various shrubs. I always thought they were foothills only but apparently they wander during the winter and migration.

Hi All,

Work continues at an increasingly fast pace to finalize logistics for the
2018 CFO annual convention, being held May 17-20, headquartered in
Longmont, Colorado. We have recently posted the field trip details on the
Next Convention page of the CFO website:
https://cobirds.org/CFO/Conventions/Next.aspx. We have multiple trips
going out in all directions from our headquarters at the Best Western Plus
Plaza Hotel (reservations available at 303-776-2000), visiting habitats
from alpine to prairie and everything in between. A convention preview,
agenda, and meals descriptions are also available at the same site.
Registration will be opening soon, as the online system is currently being
tested and trip leaders are registering. We will first open registration
to CFO members, by delivering a link to the registration site via email
(MailChimp), and then three days after that will open registration to all.

On behalf of the CFO board, we look forward to seeing you in Longmont!

Official Counter: Joyce Commercon

Observers: Jim Banks, Pat Conner

Visitors:
Jim Banks arrived early, with binoculars and his leashed dog. Later in the
morning, Pat Conner also came up to help with the watch. The day was not
particularly busy, but Jim and Pat's extra eyes were much appreciated.
There was a lot of hiker and biker traffic on the trail today, including
what appeared to be a class of grade-school students, accompanied by some
adults, on a Dinosaur Ridge outing. Throughout the day, several people came
onto the platform but mostly only for the view.

Weather:
It was a pleasant, partly-sunny watch with temperatures rising from 13 C to
16 C. Initially mild and southeasterly winds increased in strength to bft 3
and 4 and shifted early on to come mostly from the east. Cloud-cover
increased from 70 % coverage (thin, mostly translucent clouds) to 90%
coverage (smooth, mostly opaque clouds). Visibility was good.

Raptor Observations:
It was a slow day, with no particular pattern emerging from the paths of
the three migrants. The Sharp-shinned Hawk passed near to the platform and
is considered the highlight of the day.
The local Red-tailed Hawks were rather active today, although they rarely
came very near the Ridge. A lanky, juvenile Red-tailed Hawk made several
appearances today, either alone or with one, of the usual three, adult
Red-tailed Hawks. There was plenty of leg-dropping and also a few tussles
during the day, but by the end of the watch, four Red-tailed Hawks were
seen circling as two sets of companionable pairs over the western ridges,
with one pair over Two Trees and the other pair at the forested northern
end of WestRidge.

Non-raptor Observations:
Common Ravens (one apparent pair and a single raven) displayed their flight
acumen. The single raven perched several times on the power pole north of
the platform. A small flock of Bushtits moved up and down the Ridge near
midday. Also seen or heard were Northern Flicker, Townsend's Solitaire,
American Robin, American Crow, Black-billed Magpie, bluebird species going
north, Pink-sided Dark-eyed Junco, and Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay.

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the
ridge.

The Red-necked Grebe remains as easy as ever to find at Fort Collins City
Park/Sheldon Lake the morning of 3/14/18

But I want to take this moment to say goodbye to the birding community in
this home state of mine. I'm moving to Missouri for good and leaving the
state on Friday. It's been the most amazing time ever discovering the
wonders of birding here, and the birders in Colorado have been the greatest
people I have ever met in my life. Some of my most awesome memories will be
attending the super fun CFO Conventions, the many incredible field trips by
CSU Field Ornithologists with adults my around my age, and annual multi-day
spring adventures to Southeastern Colorado.

Thank you everyone. I will never forget the positive impact the Colorado
birding community has had on me. Wouldn't be much of a happy person without
you all!

Bird on!!

Nothing exiting here for a sighting, but after recovering from a brutal
migraine this morning I went for a short walk and saw a flock of Rock
Pigeons and spotted a very striking Pied individual in the flock. A Pied
Rock Pigeon for Pie Day, just perfect a bird nerd. If you want to see the
photo of this bird, here is my checklist,

Hello Fellow Birders,

I just went out to top off the water in the birdbath in my little townhouse yard in west Centennial near Holly & Arapahoe, when I heard a 'chirp' that I didn't recognize.  Looked up at the aspen overhead and there were some red and some yellowish finchy-looking birds.  Crossbills!  From the aspen they descended to attack my feeders, then to the birdbath, then gone.  The flock numbered ~ 20.  The whole episode lasted less than 10 minutes.

   Three pictures included (hopefully).

Keep Smilin',

Thanks for your courageous post. This is a nice segue to send a friendly
reminder to all interested in viewing the Gunnison Sage-grouse. There is a
well established protocol that you can read at www.siskadee.org and the
viewing season starts on April 1. Those that go early are creating
challenges for the conservation strategy to provide a watchable wildlife
program; the cooperation of all birders is greatly appreciated and
necessary for future opportunities. There are several closure dates which
you can see on the web page. Many thanks for helping us protect one of our
most threatened birds in Colorado and one of the two really endemic species
to the state.
