[cobirds] Kit Carson County

Hello All,
Doing bird surveys in Kit Carson County this week has produced a few interesting sightings. I had a Harris' Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow and, last week, a couple of Eastern Phoebes. One of the more amazing things for me has been the number of Sandhill Cranes moving through the area. Tuesday and Wednesday I had about 6,500 moving South in groups ranging from a dozen to several hundred. They would start moving around 11:00 AM and continue until evening. I found one group of about 500 feeding in a field early in the morning on Wednesday. I think these birds are feeding in ag fields in the area before things warm up enough to produce thermals they use to gain altitude for the flight South. This is really fun to watch.
Enjoy,
Steve Larson
