[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/30/16

Continued slow banding, but today under cool and cloudy conditions.  We were excited to catch a quite lovely young MAGNOLIA WARBLER.  Here's the breakdown of the 15 new for the day:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Blue-grey Gnatcatcher 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Magnolia Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Unidentified 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Spotted Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2

We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We have 2 more closed days - Tues, Oct 4 and Wed, Oct 12. We are opening nets at about 6:50 a.m. and most days we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold, wet, windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually arriving around 9:30. Best times to visit, if you like lots of birds and fewer humans, are early mornings during the week and Sundays.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding at Chico Basin Ranch Report- 9/30/16

Hiya!

So, we did manage to trap and band the Northern Saw-whet Owl that we heard calling yesterday morning and even after his release today, he was heard calling for almost the next hour or so, although no one was able to successfully find and resight him. That brings our total of NSWO banded up to three for this season.

We also had two Rock Wrens on the first net round, along with the owl, so that was exciting. We later captured both an Audubon's and a Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler at the same time so it was nice to be able to see them side by side as there is quite a difference in the hand. Although the Audubon's was a young male and the Myrtle was an adult female, so that might also account for some of the size difference.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets and White-crowned Sparrows still dominated the capture totals today.

We will be open for one more day this season so if you haven't stopped by to visit, please do.

[cobirds] Mystery Gull at Rocky Mountain Arsenal

Took the Bird Hike this morning at Rocky Mountain Arsenal and saw some great birds (Juv Bald Eagle, Osprey). There was a mystery gull out in Havana Ponds that we couldn't identify. I see that there is a report of a Lesser Black Backed Gull at Barr Lake but I'm not sure this is the same.

The bird was the same size as the surrounding Ring-Billed Gulls. It was mostly brown with mottled white spots. This makes me think it is juvenile or perhaps a young gull. It also had more of a curved bill than the Ring-Billed Gulls and the bill was almost completely black. I think it is a young Herring Gull and it's what I've marked it as in my Ebird. If anyone is out there and can help with and ID that'd be fantastic.

[cobirds] Western Grebes and other Reservoir birds

Well, the nice weather was calling me to get out today, so I decided to do a small reservoir tour.  I saw where a bunch of Western Grebes had been reported on Ish Reservoir north of Longmont, so I decided to head up that way and take a look.  Along the way, I went by Clover Basin Reservoir and Lagerman Reservoir, but the birds present at those two spots were pretty thin (a couple of Scaup at Lagerman), so I didn't stay long.

Heading up to Ish, I saw a pretty good sized crowd on the water as I drove up.  Of course, most of them were Coot on the near end, but there were a couple of Shovelers mixed in, along with some Pied-Billed Grebes.  Looking out across the reservoir, there was a pretty good-sized flock of Western Grebes.  Counting through the scope, I got to 250 pretty quickly, there were probably a few here and there that I missed.  The Coot population today looked to be around 200 - 300, it was hard to count the ones on the far side.  I did pick out a couple of Ruddy Ducks at a distance, with their stiff tails and white cheeks.

The highlight of the morning was when an Osprey circled around on the near side of the lake and eventually dove into the water and came up with a fish.  While it was climbing above the water, a Bald Eagle came out of somewhere and started harassing it, hoping to take possession of the fish.  The osprey circled and dodged, but was not able to get away from the eagle, so it eventually dropped the fish (from quite a ways up).  The eagle tried to catch up with the fish, but it splashed back into the lake, and after a couple of small circles over that spot, the eagle flew to the south end and landed on a snag.  While it was there, there were three kestrels circling in the trees nearby for a little while, until the eagle decided to find another perch somewhere else.

After lunch, I stopped by McIntosh Reservoir in north Longmont.  There were a couple of Pelicans and Great Blue Herons on the SE corner, more Pelicans across the way.  Another flock of Western Grebes (45), along with a nice raft of Ruddy Duck (38) hanging out in the middle of the reservoir.  Way across on the north side was a flock of what looked like Blue-Wing Teal.  I could see the blue/green/white colors on the wings occasionally, with dark bills and a few that had a white patch at the base of the bill.  One of the herons came wading down the shore, stopped about 30 yards out from me, and let me take a few pictures.

After that, it was time for a stop at Boulder Reservoir.  Again, a bunch of Western Grebes, a few Herons, a few Snowy Egrets, some more Ruddy Duck and a bunch of Gulls.  Mixed in with the gulls and standing close to a Pelican was a little gull, much smaller than it's Ring-Billed cousins.  There have been a few Franklin's Gulls reported here lately, it looked like it could be one of those. I didn't think it was a Sabine's, but I am not very familiar with either of these two yet.  There was a light brown patch on the top of the head, with darker spots on the side of the head, covering the eye.  The beak was dark, I thought the legs were dark.  I watched it on and off for about 20 minutes, but missed it when it left the spot it was in.  Standing very close to the Pelican in the picture attached.  Moved around to the south side, saw a little flock of Teal (looked like Blue Wing again) and a Spotted Sandpiper.  A kingfisher flew across the bay as an exclamation point, so I decided it was a good time to finish up.

All in all, it was a nice fall tour, the weather was perfect.  Lots of Western Grebes, some Ruddy Duck, and a Bald Eagle.

Good Birding -

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Bnading at Chico Basin Ranch Update 9/29/16

Hiya!

The last few days have been a bit slow here at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) and we've been averaging about a dozen birds banded each day. Ruby-crowned Kinglets have been the number one species banded over the last two days and we were fortunate to also band a handsome adult male Golden-crowned Kinglet, a bird that we don't often catch here. White-crowned Sparrows are still being seen here in several small flocks, although they are managing to forage in the field directly behind our nets without being caught.

Our resident owls, both Great Horned and Barn, were out for quite some time after sunrise today with the former calling well into the morning. We don't ever catch the larger owls as with the mesh size that we use for our nets, they would unfortunately go right through them. It is however nice to hear them hooting as we set up our nets. Haha although I'm sure that some of the smaller owls and other birds would disagree. :)

Remember our last day for fall banding is this Saturday, October 1st! If you do plan on stopping by either tomorrow or Saturday I would suggest the earlier the better as we are now often finding ourselves without birds after the 9am net round.

Re: [cobirds] cranes over Lookout Rd, Niwot (Bldr Cnty)

I saw and heard three small groups of cranes over the foothills of Fort Collins, Reservoir Ridge, on Monday morning the 26th of September.  Each group had about 8-12 cranes.  These three groups were fairly high but could be seen and heard clearly.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/29/16

Things continue to be slow.  There were flocks of Chipping Sparrows around at both the beginning and end of morning, but most avoided the nets.  Here's the breakdown of the 19 new birds:

Hermit Thrush 2
Grey Catbird 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2
Wilson's Warbler 2
Chipping Sparrow 4
Song Sparrow 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3
White-crowned Sparrow, Mountain 1

We are open 6 days each week, weather permitting, through October 16. We have 2 more closed days - Tues, Oct 4 and Wed, Oct 12. We are opening nets at about 6:50 a.m. and most days we start closing between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. We will open later and/or close earlier if it is very hot, very cold, wet, windy, etc. There are school groups most weekday mornings, usually arriving around 9:30. Best times to visit, if you like lots of birds and fewer humans, are early mornings during the week and Sundays.

[cobirds] Weld County 9-28-16

Tom Whitten and I made a few Weld County stops today, we met at Crow Valley Campground early this morning, it was quite cold for an hour or so. Just before 7 a.m. we saw our best bird there, a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker which was cooperative for photos. A couple Vireos got away from us, warblers were a single Tennessee, an Orange-crowned, and several Yellow-rumped. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher seemed late. Notable were at least 40 Townsend's Solitaires, they were everywhere that the numerous American Robins were. By the time we left at 11 it was quite hot. Bird numbers were sparse, but we had some nice variety overall.

Driving the Pawnee Grasslands produced few sparrows (Brewer's, Vesper, White-crowned), a single McCown's Longspur, and a Prairie Falcon.

Loloff Reservoir was somewhat shore-birdy at or near the northern end, with Marbled Godwits, Willets, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, and around 20 Long-billed Dowitchers. No sandpipers. There were about a dozen Redheads and two Northen Shovelers.

Lower Latham playa / flooded field south of CR 47 is dry, Beebe Draw is dry, Behrens Res looked worth a scope view but it's so far off the road and afternoon heat shimmer erased everything except a statuesque Great Egret and a few Ring-billed and Franklins Gulls.

So, out go the Lark Buntings, Loggerhead Shrikes, and so many other departures, in come the Shovelers, Solitaires, and so many other arrivals...fall is interesting.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/28/16

Today's weather was almost identical to yesterday, but yesterday there was lots of bird activity and today almost none.  Only banded 10 birds today:

Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (first flycatcher in 12 days)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Wilson's Warbler 1
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

We also caught a Black-capped Chickadee that we banded in 2010.

I also might report on a recovery of a Song Sparrow from last week.  (A "recovery" is a bird that we catch that was banded elsewhere.)  When we caught it, I figured it had been banded at Barr; I've always assumed that most if not all of the Song Sparrows at Barr are year-round residents.  After searching my Barr records and finding nothing, I asked our banding coordinator, who discovered that the bird had been banded earlier this fall at the Allegra Colister Reserve in Boulder County, outside of Lyons. So, a short story about a short-distance migrant!

[cobirds] Chautauqua Author Talk

I wanted to let everyone know that I've been asked to participate in the Chautauqua Colorado Author's Talk series. I (Christine Goff, author of the Birdwatcher's Mystery series) will be speaking Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chautauqua Community House in Boulder. Tickets are $10 ($7 for Concert Members). I will talk about my series (nominated for two WILLA Awards, a Colorado Authors' League Award and published internationally), why I choose to highlight issues such as bird trafficking in our national parks, the effect of the coffee industry on migratory birds, and poisoning of waterfowl in my books, my research methods, the juggling of multiple writing projects (my debut thriller has also been nominated for multiple awards, including a Colorado Authors' League Award, Colorado Book Award and Anthony Award) and I'll give a preview of what's coming up. In the spirit of the holidays, I am donating my share of the ticket proceeds to the Boulder Bird Club. If you're interested in more information, please visit the Chautauqua Colorado website at https://www.chautauqua.com/portfolio/christine-goff-a-parliament-of-owls/ or feel free to send me an email. Thanks.

[cobirds] Common Grackles, Turkey Vultures, and others - west Centennial area (Arapahoe)

I was beginning to despair of seeing the Common Grackle numbers that others reported here a few weeks ago. But over the past week, we've had hundreds of Common Grackles in the west Centennial area. A flock of about 250 flew over my yard on the 25th -- headed, more or less, to deKoevend Park. (Another Centennial birder a bit east of me reported about 250 on the 23rd.) Around dusk on Monday (9/26), Chris Rurik, Rebecca Laroche, and I finished up a "Big Enough" Day of birding at deKoevend, where we had at least two dozen -- and possibly more -- of these birds noisily filling the trees along the High Line Canal on the west side of the park.

Farther north up the west side of the park, we met twenty or so Turkey Vultures. A few perched in the trees on the trail, while others glided low over us to the east. A non-birder in a yard near the park asked us about the birds and whether they'd hunt his small dog. We assured him they wouldn't. Sunday evening (9/25), my wife told me about vultures perched along the High Line in this same general area, so I wonder if a few have been roosting there lately. And these birds have been passing over my yard (across University Ave from deKoevend) fairly regularly. This past weekend, I had about 40 pass over on Saturday and another dozen on Sunday.

Other highlights from Monday in west Arapahoe Co. (with a brief stop in Denver County).

- We started the day at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve, where we had Wilson's, Orange-Crowned, and Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, a catbird, and a few noisy Cooper's. Among the mallards, we had two Gadwalls and a single Blue-winged Teal. The east edge of the preserve was fairly quiet -- no flocks of waxwing, no sparrows, no warblers. But we did have an empid., which we believe to be a Least Flycatcher.
- We then headed to Willow Spring, where we had several sparrow species (the two towhees, Savannah, White-crowned, Vesper, and Song), several hummers we couldn't pin down, a Western Tanager, a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher.
- At Cherry Knolls Pond, there were two American Wigeons and three Wood Ducks among the mallards.
- Chris and I swung by McLellan Reservoir. The water was empty, but we had a late Swainson's Thrush in the conifer at the edge of the playing fields. We then visited Marston in Denver County. There was a pair of Lesser Goldfinches at Isthmus Park. Chris scoped the reservoir from there, spotting a Common Loon on the water.
- Back in Arapahoe, we met Rebecca at Ketring Park in Littletoon. Chris id'd a Norther Pintail among a trio of mallards. We also had a Pied-billed Grebe and two coots in the lake. We added Cedar Waxwings and House Sparrows (which had somehow evaded us until around 4 p.m.) here as well.
