[cobirds] Re: White-rumped Sandpiper, Adams County

It turned out that the White Rumped Sandpiper was really a miss identified Baird's Sandpiper. Sorry for the confusion. I want to thank Steve Mlodinow who fact checked me and helped me learn much more about those tricky but fun little guys. Still Barr Lake proved a good day despite the confusion. As the recent post about miss identified birds goes, I to have do so also, more recent then Audubon, at least I have something in common with famous bird watchers.

Re: [cobirds] Guide to use when misidentifying birds

When a birder mid-identifies a bird, I pose this riddle:

Question: "What do John James Audubon, Roger Tory Peterson, David Sibley and you have in common?"

Answer: "Each of you has mis-identified a bird. You just did it more recently."

[cobirds] Barr Lake - Northern Waterthrush

Cobirders,

Ann and I refound the NOWA about 300 yards north of the bridge at the Nature Center. It was in the canal bathing and flipping leaves. Got some digiscope photos that are attached to the eBird list. There was a Solitary Sandpiper in the canal as well. Lots of Wilson's Warblers.

Then several Baird's Sandpipers on the lake shore along with one Greater Yellowlegs.

[cobirds] Re: What type of Oriole?

Three votes for female Orchard Oriole. One vote for female Western Tanager.
This is a fuzzier picture, same horrid lighting, but more of a side view.

I posted this to the Facebook group, but no definite answers there yet. The bird was yellow on breast and belly (no white or buff). White wing bars. Slightly smaller than adult Bullock's Oriole.
Sorry for the bad lighting conditions in the photo. This is one of the clearer pictures, but I can try and post more if necessary.
This bird was at The Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, Adams County, August 24th. Could it really be a female Hooded or Orchard Oriole?

Re: [cobirds] Downtown Denver Peregrine Falcons

I saw one sail by as I was on a high floor (17th?) at 16th and Stout in the late 1980s.

There was a peregrine photographed from my office (by others) nearly five years ago. We are at 18th and California, 24th floor. No news of them nesting, but would be very interested to hear of that.

All,

For the past year and a half I have seen a single peregrine falcon and the intersection of 17th and Lawrence, and sometimes as far up as the Wells Fargo building at 17th and Lincoln. This includes sightings in the dead of winter as well as spring.

Today I saw two birds flying above 17th street at Lawrence heading towards Broadway, but I lost track of them as I was walking up 17th.

Does anyone know if there are any nest boxes deployed downtown as other cities have done?

Anyone on this list who works downtown should keep an eye out in case they decide to nest!

Re: [cobirds] Bird Obit & future

Thanks, Hugh, and this is always a good opportunity to educate/remind people about putting decals in windows that present a risk to birds.  They are available from any of the stores that sell products for wild birds, and might be available (or maybe should be) from the Museum gift shop.

Again,

Put the bird in a ziplock bag & seal it. Make a label about ID, location, date, and any other details (cause of death), and put that and the first zip lock bag into another ziplock bag. Then pop them into a freezer until you can get the specimen to the Museum. They will prepare the skin, take DNA samples and other samples, and put your find to good use.

age Carr <pagescats@q.com>: Aug 27 08:00AM -0700

Sad morning. Our neighbor called us after a female Yellow Warbler ran into
their window. We rushed over to see if it was okay but unfortunately she
died in our hands. She was un-banded. My daughter had read an article
about bird obituaries but the only one we could find was one for New York.
Is there a Colorado database for dead birds?

Thank you for your help.
