I did some birding at favorite spots around Gilpin County this morning. Of note were two Fox Sparrows singing along the road to the Moffat Tunnel, one on either side of Tolland. In addition I found a Red-naped Sapsucker just east of Tolland. Los Lagos Lakes had one Osprey that I could see, that’s an expected species as they have nested here for years. What wasn’t expected was an adult Bald Eagle sitting on a nest (though not the Osprey nest—the eagle’s nest was tucked away a bit in the trees on the south side of the lake). The lake itself was still 80% ice, but it did have one Bufflehead among the 5 ducks of 4 species present. At nearby Manchester Lake a pair of Great Blue Herons were also occupying a nest.
