[cobirds] Firestone Gravel Pits Birds, Weld County a note on Peter Matthiessen, Author/ Naturalist

Hello,    This bright morning I had 4 White Pelicans, 4 Eared and 2 Pied billed Grebes out in Firestone. This afternoon I have learned of the passing of Peter Matthiessen, Long Island, N.Y. author, naturalist, environmentalist. Peter lived many years close to Sagg Pond, a noted shorebird locale that almost annually had rarities. He was a passionate birder and wildlife enthusiast and of all the many great nature writers we have perhaps no one wrote as eloquently of our worlds wildlife or as insightfully of their surroundings. His, "Shorebirds of North America", is truly a classic in the field as well as being a work of great beauty. Peter wrote of the Himalayas and a search for the elusive Snow Leopard in," The Snow Leopard", and of the Arctic Skua in, "End of the Earth, A Voyage to Antarctica", and of the worlds Crane species in," The Birds of Heaven, Travels with Cranes". His writings have been a life long inspiration to me and no doubt many others. Farewell Peter.               Carl Starace,   Longmont
