[cobirds] Cape May, Larimer

COBirds,

Big thanks to Dave Leatherman for finding this bird and getting the word out, and of course for being at the spot (NE side of Section E) when I pulled up and showing me exactly what trees to check.  Josh Bruening fortuitously showed up right when the Cape May appeared peeping out of a spruce.  Took almost 2 hours for the bird to show face so be patient and check the spruces. It was in the spruce closest to the gravel road, the same spruce which is somewhat 'under' the current psyllid-infested hackberry. Bird was foraging low, 8-12 feet up, in the spruce for the several minutes we watched. Not sure the age/sex of this one - pretty bright yellow underneath with extensive sharp black streaking and a decent white wing panel, small amount of black spotting on mantle, although no sign of any chestnut in the cheeks.  Seemed quite tame as it gleaned from the outer spruce twigs and allowed for some documentary photos which I will upload in a minute.  Never saw CMWA in 20 years of living in Texas so it was nice to get this lifer a block up the road 3 weeks after moving to Ft Collins!

Good birding,
Derek Hill
Fort Collins
