June 2013 Field Trips
Saturday, June 15 Pawnee Grasslands, Pawnee Buttes, Crow Valley Campground (Weld County)

This will be a full-day trip to the eastern plains. We'll be looking for Mountain Plovers, longspurs, raptors, and many summer plains species. Meet Ira and Tammy at 5:30 a.m. at the State Parks and Wildlife office parking lot at 6060 Broadway. Take the 58th St. exit off I-25. Parks and Wildlife Office is west of I-25 and a couple blocks north of 58th.
All-day trip. Bring lunch, hat, plenty of water, radios. Be prepared for predicted weather.
Sunday, June 16 Lyons area (Boulder County)

Join Davis in Lyons for some postmigration birding. Should get good looks at birds (with chicks) that nest around Lyons and in Davis's 35 birdhouses.
Should see Bobolink, 4 swallows, 2 eagles, 2 wrens, 2 chickadees, 4 finches, 3 jays, 3 woodpeckers, 2 bluebirds, 2 nuthatches, dipper, grosbeak, catbird, 3 flycatchers, 4 sparrows, hummingbird, crossbill, merganser (hopefully with chicks), and maybe glimpses of Wild Turkeys seen recently on his property. Meet at the Lyons Park-n-Ride just south of 4th Ave. and Main St. (by the skateboard park and library) at 8:30 a.m. Plan on walking level ground for 1–3 miles, car birding, and eating lunch on Davis's decks. Good photo opportunities likely, and all are welcome. Wheelchair accessible.
Saturday, June 22 Staunton State Park (Jefferson County)

Another new location for DFO! This is a trip to newly opened Staunton State Park where Bob did an atlas block some years ago. He had 50 total breeding species, including Red-naped and Williamson's Sapsuckers, Olive-sided and Cordilleran Flycatchers, Tree and Violet-green Swallows, Mountain and Western Bluebirds, Lincoln's Sparrow, and others. Meet at Morrison Park-n-Ride on the northwest corner of C-470 and Morrison Road (CO 8) at 6:30 a.m. for carpooling. The park location is about 40 minutes up U.S. 285 near Pine Junction.

This is a moderately demanding trip with 3–5 miles of walking at 9,000-foot altitudes. No rough trails. Need lunch and water. All-day trip.
Sunday, June 23 Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe County)

Meet leader at 8 a.m. at the marina at Cherry Creek State Park (fee area).
From the west park entrance follow the signs to the marina. We'll see what surprises we find on the lake and riparian areas in the park. Bring water, scopes, snacks, sunscreen. This is a half-day trip.
Saturday, June 29 Mt. Evans and Summit Lake (Clear Creek County)

This trip will traverse several elevations. We'll be checking out the summer mountain birds at Fillius Park, Echo Lake, and Summit Lake.
Please preregister with leader. Limit 10 people.
Meet leader at 8 a.m. at Fillius Park. Go west on I-70 to exit 252. Exit onto Evergreen Parkway (CO 74). Go 2 miles on CO 74 to first traffic light and turn right into Fillius Park. Park at the shelter house. Bring lunch, water, hat, sunscreen for a day in the mountains.
