[cobirds] Interesting Sparrow / Denver

Just thinking out loud, I post this mainly to alert fellow suburbanites to keep their eyes peeled.

Yesterday morning, still in my robe, I went out to fill the feeders.  As I wrestled with one, trying not to spill a scoop of sunflower with one hand while not getting snow on my slippers with the other, I realized there was a sparrow perched on a tube feeder about 15 or 20 feet from me.  Pale yellowish, with streaks down the sides of the breast, streaks that were so defined they looked to have been drawn with a pen, very much unlike the smeared streaks of, say, a song sparrow.  Thicker and lower than  Lincoln's, though.   A darkish crown, and.....

0.9 seconds later, it flew, already wary of me moving before I spotted it.  Could it, I wonder, have been a LeConte's?  I'm not familiar with the bird, and my look at it was far to brief to make a claim.  I've had my nose pressed to the glass for 24 hours, hoping for it's return, but to no avail.  It seems to have moved on, if it's ignored the obvious feeding activity that's gone on here since.

I settled for 2 White-breasted and 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, 1 Brown Creeper, 2 Chickadees, 1 pair Downys, 1 pair Flickers, a half dozen Juncos including a couple of newly-arrived Pink-sided, one exciting attack on House Sparrows by an adult Cooper's Hawk, and some noisy crows.  Fingers crossed for a longer look at that sparrow.

[cobirds] Pueblo City Park, (Pueblo County), Oct 28

Mark Yaeger and I walked around Pueblo City Park from 930am to 11am.  There were a lot of birds.  The best things were ten Red Crossbills, an Evening Grosbeak, two Pygmy Nuthatches, a Yellow-shafted Flicker, and six Chipping Sparrows.  There were plenty of other small birds, including Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Brown Creepers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees, Townsend's Solitaires, Dark-eyed Juncos, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins.  We also saw a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, no flock.  We could hear some Yellow-rumped Warblers inside the Pueblo Zoo, so perhaps the bigger flock of warblers were in there.  Maybe sometime soon, I will walk around inside the zoo, and see what might be hiding in there.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival

We have a blue-phase snowgoose on Windsor Reservoir.  If anyone needs it for a list our number is 970-686-1251.

Re: [cobirds] Re: March 4 Birding Trip to Canon City from Denver County: DFO: Thursday Special

Apologies, I was trying to send this from the Google group site to a member of cobirds whose email address I do not have.  Unlike the previous host site for cobirds, this would not give me his email address so I thought I could send my note to him but instead it came to cobirds.

Does anyone know how we can get email addresses of other cobird subscribers on Google groups (something generally allowed to listserve members)?

Charles,

I was checking ebird for reports of Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks in the Canon City area and found you reported on 3-4-10 first for DFO then for yourself 3 Harlan's Hawks in Temple Canyon Park and same day 6 Harlan's Hawks on the Canon City Riverwalk.

I suspect you intended to record another species that is more likely seen in groups.

[cobirds] Harlan Red-tailed Hawks in Otero and Pueblo Counties

Today I birded in Otero and eastern Pueblo Counties.  I found 3 Harlan's Red-tailed Hawks (one appears to be the Harlan's I found last week).  Seems like a lot of Harlan's in southern Colorado this week.  Lake Henry and Lake Meredith both had even lower water levels but covered with thousands of birds.  I found 2 Wilson's Snipe, a Greater Yellowlegs and a flock of dowitchers (Long-billed I think).  Too many photos to do tonight so I will get photos of the 3 Harlan's and some of the other birds up on my Birds and Nature blog by tomorrow afternoon.
