Re: [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report/ Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- May 31, 2024

We'll miss you, Julie! Have a good Midwestern summer and we'll see you in September. Even the cows were giving you a loud sendoff! (branding day).

Special thanks to Colin Woolley and Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for managing the banding station.

And please note that although spring banding has wrapped up, Chico is still open to birders for 2 more days (through the weekend).

Lots of larking Cassin's Sparrows to be seen and heard!

[cobirds] Pineridge Natural Area

It was the last week of banding, and the numbers reflected migration slowing down. With higher number of resident birds caught, the station has a sample of birds who stay at the natural area to breed. This station is unique in that public trails pass right by and get to see the work being done to research avian distribution, demography, migration stopovers, and population. There were many new species for the station and return residents that were banded here in 2023. [cobirds] Re: Nighthawk, Flycatchers, Whip-poor-will recordings - Arapahoe

This morning, while listening to a Western Flycatcher (on one side of the High Line Canal Trail in Centennial), I watched one of the Eastern Phoebes hunting moths on the other side. I never saw a second or saw evidence of a phoebe nest, but there are some odd built structures along the Canal in this area where a nest would be viable and out of sight. The phoebe vocalized a bit this morning, too.

For reference, this is near where the Little Dry Creek bisects the High Line Canal Trail, slightly southwest of the footbridge that goes over the creek.

This morning, I biked the Little Dry Creek Trail and High Line Canal Trail in Centennial to count Western Flycatchers (who were in two locations) and look for the Eastern Phoebe pair (didn't encounter them). Last year, I encountered Westerns in 4 discrete locations along these trails.

Also along the High Line Canal Trail, singing Chipping Sparrows and a Dark-eyed Junco. Juncos may nest in the area, but I've never seen anything other than "late" birds and one very early and half-hearted sign of nest building.

If you're interested in hearing my Eastern Whip-poor-will recordings from my recent trip to Missouri (plus a little of my own interpretation of their call), you can do so in my recent blog post. Soonish, I'll also post about actually seeing the birds and eventually I'll post about watching them be banded.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/29/24

This will be remembered in Chatfield Banding Station history as "the day of the bear".

A slow banding morning was interrupted about an hour early by a visit from a bear.  It was first spotted (and reported to us) by some hikers a few hundred yards from the actual station.  As volunteer Joyce Commercon was on her phone, reporting the sighting to the Chatfield State Park Manager, the bear walked in through the entrance to the banding station and came toward us.  A pretty exciting couple of minutes, as we made as much noise as possible; he sat down briefly and sniffed his tummy before lumbering off up the road.  The bear was seen later, moving further south, away from our area.  Thanks to the Park Manager Kris Wahlers for being available, answering our questions, and coming over to check things out.

Only 11 new birds banded today:

Cedar Waxwing 1
Yellow Warbler 7
Magnolia Warbler 1 (after catching only 1 ever, in 2014, we have caught 2 this season.  This was the most newsworthy item of the day, until the bear......)
Common Yellowthroat 1
American Goldfinch 1

Two more days!  Taking the station down on Friday.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report/ Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- May 29, 2024

A quiet bird day at the ranch but by no means it was not quiet- Ranchlands was moooving cows to a pasture near the banding station. Sorry for the joke- It seemed fitting. Anyhow, there were two highlights of the bird banding day: a Warbling Vireo which was first of the season and a returning Blue Grosbeak male- banded as an adult in fall of 2022 ( He is at least 4 years old!). Breeding birds tend to have high site fidelity so they return to the same area to breed even year. We just may not catch them in a net when they arrive at their breeding territory.

8 New Banded Birds
Yellow Warbler- 1
Warbling Vireo- 1
Lincoln's Sparrow- 1
Yellow-breasted Chat- 1
Hermit Thrush- 2
Swainson's Thrush- 1
Bullock's Oriole- 1

3 Recaptures and a Returning Blue Grosbeak
Lazuli Bunting- 3
Blue Grosbeak- 1

Enjoy the last days of May!
There are two days left of banding at Chico Basin Ranch for this season. When you sign up at Aiken Audubon Website for a morning visit, Please stop by the banding station to share your bird or wildlife sightings.

Thank you to all the volunteers and Birders who have shared their time and knowledge about Colorado Birds. Thanks for all your help this spring season.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/28/24

I was hoping that in our last week we'd pick up numbers for our commonly banded species that are below average - Yellow Warblers, House Wrens, Yellow-breasted Chats, any Vireos.  We did have a few today, but what was most noticeable was the not rare but unusual captures - a Gray Flycatcher (one caught every 3 or 4 years),  a pair of Say's Phoebes (2 caught in 2010), a third Lazuli Bunting (all females), 3 more Redstarts (first time we've caught 7 in a season).  Interesting!  Here's the breakdown of the 24 new captures:

Gray Flycatcher 1
Say's Phoebe 2
House Wren 2
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 2 new, 1 banded 2019
Cedar Waxwing 1
Yellow Warbler 4 new, 1 banded 2021
American Redstart 3
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
 Lazuli Bunting 1
Red-winged Blackbird 2

[cobirds] Red-headed Woodpecker near San Luis

How often do you get to see the same bird, twice in two days? I think I did. Yesterday at Sanchez Reservoir, I saw a Red-headed Woodpecker fly into a cottonwood tree. Today, with the binocs and cameras left behind, I saw a Red-headed Woodpecker about 5 miles north of where I had seen it yesterday. I believe it was the same bird. As this bird wanders north, I would expect it at Smith Reservoir in a few days.

This species is considered rare in the San Luis Valley. Best way to see rare birds down here is to take your fishing pole instead of camera and binocs! I should know better!

[cobirds] Hummers

There seems to be fewer hummers at my feeders this year in Longmont. I realize there are so many flowers on the menu as well this moist year, but wondering if anyone else noticing this?

****There is 3 more days for the Chico Basin Ranch to be open to birders until end of August. It is necessary for those birding the ranch to go online to register at
Aiken Audubon Website for a morning to visit. There is a daily registration fee.
Because of the new Leasing system the Ranch is not open all day or everyday for free roaming or birding. Please respect the new rules or there is a good chance the area could be closed all year to birding visits. I would not like to see that happen.

Have a good day,

[cobirds] Pineridge Natural Area

We had another great week, starting off strong with 62 birds and a couple school groups to watch the action. Wing traffic slowed down slightly the following days, but there were many opportunities to show visitors the banding process and the great diversity that is in this natural area. We had our first Warbling Vireos, a few more Lazuli Buntings, and some new stars, such as a Veery, American Redstart, and Black-throated Green Warbler. There has been an increase in resident birds that breed in the area like the Western Tanager, Bullock's Oriole, and Swainson's Thrush. [cobirds] Flycatchers - Arapahoe

I took a brief walk along the High Line Canal Trail near the High Line Canal Conservancy office in Greenwood Village / Centennial. A Western Flycatcher is along the Little Dry Creek. I first encountered them breeding along the Little Dry Creek in 2018, but I didn't bird this area much before then. They've seemed to grow in numbers along the Creek and Canal Trail since then. An Eastern Phoebe continued along the Canal, singing a bit from a moderately high perch. However, he flew off (much higher) into a surrounding neighborhood, in the general direction of Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. I'm not sure what the status of the pair I saw there earlier in spring is.

For those into flowers: Textile Onions, Western Spiderworts, Wholeleaf Paintbrush, and Scarlet Globemallow are looking pretty. Prairie False Dandelions are going to seed.

Unrelated: I just returned from a trip to the Ozarks in Missouri to observe Whip-poor-will research and hear the species. Unreal what they sound like when they're so common--it seemed as if every spot had 2-4 singing. I'll blog about this sometime soon, for those interested, and I'll post some recordings. Plus a lifer Kentucky Warbler (the only warbler who I actually saw through the leaves). And cicadas and butterflies galore!

Oh, waiting on my first of the year in Colorado Common Nighthawk. Any dusk now. (Heard one in MO.)

[cobirds] Orchard Oriole, Boulder County

At Sawhill Ponds by Lake 1, there was a singing 1st year Orchard Oriole!

It had interesting coloration with a little orange showing up on its yellow breast.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Station Report/ Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- May 27, 2024

Happy Memorial Day! Thank you very much to all the persons who have served or are serving in the military. Thanks for your sacrifices for enduring our American Freedoms. We should not take our freedoms for granted.
The banding station had a little bit of bird movement today. I heard that the Headquarters and was hopping with birds as well- a Blackburnian and Hooded Warbler were seen and heard there this morning. Those are special birds for sure!
A few Wilson's and MacGillivray's Warblers paid us a visit which was a pleasant surprise. Eleven bird species captured today including last year's returning male Lazuli Bunting. It is great to see some returning birds.

46 New Banded Birds
Yellow Warbler- 2
Wilson's Warbler- 4
MacGillivray's Warbler- 6
Western Wood-pewee- 1
Dusky Flycatcher- 1
Lincoln's Sparrow- 3
Lazuli Bunting- 3
Swainson's Thrush- 22
Hermit Thrush- 2
Blue Grosbeak-1
Gray Catbird- 1

 2 Recaptures
 MacGillivray's Warbler
Wilson's Warbler

Returning bird- banded last year as an adult
Lazuli Bunting

The banding station will be open tomorrow through Friday Sunrise to @ 11AM. Please stop by and share your sightings on the ranch. Some folks do not post on the Chico Basin Whats app anymore so I don't always hear what birds are on the ranch.
***If wanting to visit Chico Basin, it is open to a limited number of people each day during this month. Please go to the Aiken Audubon Website to register for a morning to visit. There is a daily registration fee.

Have a good Memorial Day!
