[cobirds] Re: John B. Hayes entry in 1999 Lark Bunting

Hi all,
I have heard from several birders who remember JB. Kathy Dunning shared this DFO Lark Bunting from 1999, which shows a trip he led from Deer Creek Canyon to Meyer Ranch.
It's very interesting to see the way folks shared sightings then - by phone call!

Hi all,
I just wanted to update some of the "old-timers" on "J.B" as his friends call him. I believe Hugh Kingery, Norm Erthal, and others may know him.

He is in a convalescent home, and he told me today that he has seen 4 species from his window!  Once a birder, always a birder!

JB was my Personal Training client for several years before he moved to Wind Crest. During our time together he was also my mentor, patiently answering my questions about birds and birding. He had traveled all over the country and was one of the top birders in Colorado and the US in his day!

JB was one of the few folks who birded Attu, the island that marks the westernmost point of the United States, before they shut down the flights there. In the attached photo he is wearing his hat from that trip many years ago.
Mark Obmascik wrote about the island in "The Big Year." Indeed JB rubbed elbows with the real life birders portrayed in the movie of the same name.

I hope if any of you remember him and would like me to pass along a message let me know! It would cheer him up.
