[cobirds] A last hurrah for the Denver metro area?

Jared, I'm about a mile west of you and same experience here; I've had multiple tanagers here over the past week working mainly my oranges but they did start to go after the jelly in my oriole feeder as well (something the few orioles I've had didn't do) but nothing today; a remarkable fallout indeed and I look forward to learning more about why this event has apparently happened the whole way to the Great Lakes but am afraid it may be wrapping up in our neck of the woods.

All the best, Matt

[cobirds] Red-headed woodpecker continues, Larimer County

A few tanagers are still hanging around our feeders, with a few Lazuli buntings, black-headed grosbeaks, and occasionally a female or male oriole, but the red-headed woodpecker is the most stunning. He likes the sunflower seeds the best but will eat some suet too.

[cobirds] Re: A last hurrah for the Denver metro area?

We've noticed a diminished number of visits to the feeder from the tanagers but we're still seeing them quite frequently.  Just a bit ago we had 2 males and 2 females.  We've also been visited by a male and female black-headed grosbeak this last week, and saw the female today.  What a week!  But now it's time the tanagers get moving.  I hope they remember us this fall.  We're also seeing much less activity in the yard from the broad-tailed hummingbirds.

An Olive-sided Flycatcher, which I'd earlier seen a few houses away, visited too.

This morning -- nothing. This afternoon -- nothing. (Even the singing, male Yellow Warbler appears gone.) I'm sure if I traversed the High Line Canal Trail, I might find some stragglers. But for the last week or two or more, my yard's been full. Now, the place is filled with only absences.

Are others in the Denver metro area noting the same thing--empty spaces where the birds were yesterday or the day before? Or is it just my yard?

[cobirds] Re: Tanagers - on Channel 9 news tonight

Thank you for the heads up, Hugh.  We recorded it, and while watching the playback we see a photo of a tanager on a jelly feeder, I thought wow, there's another Lesley Brown who has Western Tanagers!  LOL, it was my shot.  Just a little mind-blowing to see my name and pic on TV.  : )

We are still having multiple and frequent visits to the feeders by the tanagers, just a little while ago we had 4 males at one time.  This tanager spring is memorable.  I hope the birds get into their usual pattern soon, for their sake.  But I will saturate my eyes while I can.  : )

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield, 5/30/19

Nice to see the sun again, although it means fewer birds around. I hope it also means the birds can begin to recover from the impact of the recent storms and cold weather.  We caught 33 new birds today:

Northern Flicker, Red-shafted 1 (FOS)
Western Wood-pewee 1
Willow Flycatcher 1
Dusky Flycatcher 2
Warbling Vireo 1 new, 1 banded 2016
House Wren 1
Swainson's Thrush 8
Cedar Waxwing 1 new, 1 banded 2018 (first time we've ever recaught a CEDW from a prior season)
Yellow Warbler 5 new, 1 banded 2016
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Western Tanager 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Lesser Goldfinch 2

Tomorrow is our last day; we will take down the station after banding, my guess is we will start take-down about 11 a.m.

Re: [cobirds] Steamboat?

Carpenter Ranch has great birding; Walden; turn offs from Rabbit Ears Pass; Sarvice Creek.

Are you looking for any species in particular?

I used to spend summers in Steamboat. Feel free to e-mail me. I can also give you names of local birders who are likely willing to help you out!

Re: [cobirds] Steamboat?

There is also a great summary of building locations in the general area. I assume that you could find it online. When I was there this winter, our concierge found it for me and printed out a copy. It had descriptions, locations, and the general bird species you could expect to see in the general area.   I tried out several of them, having a great time.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 5/30

Quite a few interesting birds continue in Pueblo this morning.

Tim and Lindsay saw the Yellow-throated Warbler at Roselawn Cemetery in Blende (usually just east of the West Entrance of the Cemetery off Aspen Road), first found on May 11th by Evan Carlson.

Along the Arkansas River, east of Reservoir Drive in Pueblo.  The singing Chestnut-sided Warbler and Bell's Vireo continue for their 4th day (first seen on Monday by Rick Clawges), the Carolina Wren continues as well (this bird has been around for a couple years now).  One new surprise, was an adult male Summer Tanager, that Tim, Lindsay, and I saw this morning.  A Willow Flycatcher was singing its "fitz bew" song this morning as well.  West of Reservoir Drive, I had a singing Olive-sided Flycatcher "quick three beers".  Some other mountain migrant birds continue, Wilson's, MacGillivray's, and Audubon's "Yellow-rumped" Warblers, Western Tanagers, Swainson's Thrush, Lincoln's Sparrows, Violet-green Swallows.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Red-headed woodpecker and rose-breasted grosbeak, Larimer County

Hi all
Last evening we had a rose-breasted grosbeak at the feeders, and this morning about 6:15 am we had a red-headed woodpecker on the feeders. What a crazy magical spring. It is almost surreal. The Western tanagers are still flying about too as well as the hybrid oriole. And we have been seeing a black-headed grosbeak. It is hard to leave the window!
