It is best to view the bird from the concrete spit exposed by low water, to the west of the actual river.

Okay, my bad.... after additional research, it appears I confused the CONW with the Nashville Warbler.

Re: [cobirds] JeffCo: Red Phalarope & Jaeger, DougCo: Eastern Towhee

Folks,

The Red Phalarope and jaeger continue at Chatfield.  I lost track of the Phalarope a while ago, but I've been following the jaeger.  The jaeger may be a Long-tailed, but I am leaning towards Parasitic for the following reasons.  It seems warm, cinamon-looking.  The bill appears long with a small, dark nail.  I see more than two shafts of white from above at times. That said, it is never close to shore and unviewable from the south side of the lake due to all of the closures.

Lastly, I have had a juvenile, Eastern Towhee visiting my feeders in Castle Rock since early this morning.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/30/18

Barr Lake may have been the only spot in the metro area that was covered in fog which then turned to drizzle this morning.  We opened a few nets and caught 2 new White-crowned Sparrows and 1 recap Hermit Thrush before calling it a day.

We are closed tomorrow (Monday), then back out Tuesday morning.

[cobirds] Red Phalarope

On the evening of Sept. 27th Carolyn and I found a Red Phalarope on McPhee Reservoir (Montezuma County). We were out messing around in a boat, luckily had binos, but no camera. The site was walking distance, 1/2-3/4 mile to NW across mudflats, from McPhee marina. On the morning of the 28th, Erik Hendrickson and I failed to refind the bird to get photographs.
Ashamedly tardy posting this, Glenn

[cobirds] Possible Gray-cheeked Thrush at First Creek

Possible GCTH at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR - First Creek.  Bird was found in the cottonwoods running east of the fence corner near the pond at the end of the path (along dirt road).  Distinctly different thrush from Hermit Thrush seen at trail start on east side of road ten minutes later.
No rufous in tail/rump.  Slight rufous in primaries.  Extremely thin eye ring (Hermit was bolder).  Very gray flanks.  Dull back (the Hermit was much warmer).  Throat had a yellow wash.  Bill was yellow at base with a dark tip (halfway) on top and bottom of bill.  Bird did not call, but it did allow for long, fairly close looks - not shy.  Bird eventually flew southwest across pond.  Would love it if other birders could confirm.

[cobirds] Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins (Larimer) on 30Sept2018

Grandview Cemetery, west terminus of Mountain Avenue, Fort Collins, in the drizzle between 8:45 and 11:30am:

White-throated Sparrow (2) both birds appear to be immatures molting into adult plumage (tan striped heads, bright white throats, stripes on flanks and somewhat across upper breast)

White-crowned Sparrow (4a)

Spotted Towhee (1m with dark brown eye)

Hermit Thrush (at least 1, possibly 2)

Western Tanager (2) eating European buckthorn fruits

Townsend's Warbler (at least 1)

Yellow-rumped Warbler (several)

Ruby-crowned Kinglet (several)

Chipping Sparrow (several)

Falcon (flyover, suspect Merlin, seemed stiffer and chunkier than kestrel)

Almost all the above sparrows, thrushes and tanagers were in the southeastern corner between the road into the shop area and the pump house along the ditch associated with buckthorn and cotoneaster bushes with fruits.  Warblers, kinglets were in elms along the south boundary of cemetery with golf course, up high, difficult to see well.

Total of 24 species.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/29/18

Hard to adjust to this cold weather after such a warm month!  My fingers were freezing during the first hour or so, but my great team of Saturday volunteers got the early birds - mostly warblers and kinglets - in and out in record time.  38 new birds plus another 21 recaps made for a busy morning, which we shared with Hugh and Urling's Beginning Birder class from Denver Audubon.  Breakdown of the 38 new birds:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 5
Orange-crowned Warbler 9
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 7
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1
Wilson's Warbler 4
Chipping Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 7

We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:50 and should have birds back at the station by 7:30. We will close most days by about 11:30. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Update on Vermillion Flycatcher

COBirders,
Unfortunately the bird was only seen by a handful of birders for 2-3 minutes before it flew off to the Northwest. We spent several hours trying to relocate the bird without any luck.

I've attached two distant photos to the eBird checklist here.

Good birding,
Peter
