[cobirds] Walker Pit, Douglas

Urling & I just came home from watching a huge number of waterfowl on the Walker Pit (a/k/a Walker Gravel Pond).
We don't have numbers tallied yet but the list includes 200+ Cackling Geese, 100 Gadwalls, 100+ Am. Wigeon, 50+ N. Shovelers, Lesser Scaup, Canada Geese, plus some Mallards, GW Teal, Ring-necked Duck, Redhead, Canvasback, Bufflehead, Common & Hooded Mergansers, Ruddy Duck, N. Pintail, Pied-billed Grebe, Am. Coots & Ring-billed Gulls.
    One Snow Goose immature.
    Probably others that we missed.

As an aside, at our home we hosted a Denver Audubon bird class last Saturday and saw our FOS Am. Tree Sparrows & White-winged Juncos. The Junco numbers have increased since then. P
atronizing our feeders daily,  3 Pygmy Nuthatches and one Red-breasted -- species we don't ordinarily see regularly.

[cobirds] strange warbler at Sloan's Lake (near SW corner parking lot)

I was just at Sloan's Lake and saw a strange warbler.  Passing it along in case anybody wants to check it out or has any ideas.  I heard loud steady chipping & then got a glimpse of a warbler with a chestnut cap and yellow around base of tail. I'm no warbler expert, but it seemed strange. Got one good look from below & jotted down notes: clear brown breast, yellow under base of tail, and whiter under tail. Never saw it again. Looked just like a Colima warbler but that is extremely unlikely so maybe a palm warbler or Virginia's or Lucy's. In trees along SW shore of the lake, near the maintenance yard.  I also saw a female yellow-rumped warbler in the same area but definitely different birds.

[cobirds] Eastern Bluebird & Possible Greater White-fronted Goose - Wash Park (Denver)

A co-worker sent me a report and some photos of what appears to be an Eastern Bluebird (rusty throat, white belly) at Washington Park in Denver this afternoon (10/31). He told me it's near the lawn-bowling field. He also saw a probable Greater White-fronted Goose at the park as well, in Grasmere Lake.

Given the scarcity of Denver County & Denver metro reports of Eastern Bluebirds, I thought this was worth sharing.

[cobirds] Eastern Bluebirds at Washington Park, Denver County

Around 3 today, while strolling in Washington Park, I came across a mixed flock
of 8 Eastern Bluebirds (first county record for me), 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 5 Dark-eyed Juncos, the usual
House Finches and for comic relief, a few squealing Starlings.

Buffleheads are back in numbers (71), with Ring-necked Ducks (13), Cackling Geese,
and a lone Cormorant. There was a lone Spotted Sandpiper, half of the flock of two
last week.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir Halloween re-cap

Bill Maynard and John Drummond came down from El Paso County, and
helped me sort through the 5000-7000 ducks off the South Shore Marina
area of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County today. We saw at least five
Surf Scoters, the one Black Scoter, and the male EURASIAN WIGEON (I
think the first one I've ever seen on Pueblo Reservoir)! Nearly all
the regular duck species were present, except for no Common Mergansers
or Common Goldeneyes, which I saw yesterday, below the dam. There
were two Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 5 Common Loons, 5 Bonaparte's
Gulls, 5 Red-breasted Mergansers as well. One other highlight today,
I saw an Eastern Bluebird in the Osprey Picnic Area, in Rock Canyon,
below the dam.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Cherry Creek Res (Arapahoe CO)

Hi

Good activity on the Reservoir today

14 species of ducks, including several Canvasbacks

1 Greater Yellowlegs flying around the south end

7 American Avocets, look on the small beach-lets on the southern end

Ran into Randy Lentz who was birding the reservoir in the earlier morning. I arrived later when the sun was out. What I saw corresponded with what Randy saw. It was good to see Randy again. Also ran into Diane Roberts who previously had seen a Sandhilll Crane flying over and possibly some Eastern Bluebirds.

Cheers, Bob

Re: [cobirds] West Arapahoe. Co Birding

Yes, Golden-crowned Kinglets have been recorded at Littleton Cemetery, but they are infrequent there and generally missing from the surrounding neighborhood.

It might be worth birding parks with conifers in search of these. By the way, I saw your Steller's Jay reports in your yard. I haven't seen one in my yard yet, but I assure myself it will be any day now.

[cobirds] Re: Mountain Lakes

One GLARING omission on the participants!  We met up with David Dowell first thing in the morning and spent the entire day caravaning all over the mountains.  Thanks David for the great day of scoter-ing!

Norm Erthal, Dan Brooke, Cheryl Teuton and I headed up to some mountain
lakes today under beautiful, sunny skies and calm winds.

It appears that many "waterbirds" have not come down from the north yet, but
still some goodies are present already.

Eleven Mile Reservoir (Park):
2 Surf Scoters in the middle of the lake
22 Surf Scoters in a single flock at the west end of the lake
Among the flock of twenty-two Surf Scoters was 4 White-winged
Scoters!  26 total scoters in a single flock!
        3 Common Loons

Spinney Mountain Reservoir (Park):
        4 Surf Scoters
        2 Common Loons

Antero Reservoir (Park):
        1 Surf Scoter
        6 Common Loons

Buffalo Creek Reservoir (Park):
        Many ducks, nothing unexpected

Ice Pond (in Buena Vista) (Chaffee)
        Many ducks, nothing unexpected

Clear Creek Lake (Chaffee):
VERY few birds on the lake; nothing unusual

Mt Elbert Forebay (Lake):
        5 Common Mergansers...that was it!

Dillon Reservoir (Summit):
VERY few birds; nothing of note

Blue River Wastewater Treatment Plant (Summit):
Several species of dabbling ducks (no goldeneyes)
One BAT flying around the pond!!!!  In the daytime!

Hopefully the upcoming weather brings more birds down into Colorado as
northern lakes/ponds start to freeze up.
