[cobirds] Dr. George Archibald, co-founder of the International Crane Festival, presentation

The keynote speaker for this year's spring Crane Festival in Monte Vista, CO, is Dr. George Archibald from the International Crane Foundation. Dr. Archibald has studied cranes for over 45 years since he worked on the vocal behavior and evolution of cranes for his Ph.D. at Cornell University. He has devoted his life to the conservation of cranes and the habitat on which they depend. Since he co-founded the International Crane Foundation in 1973, Dr. Archibald has studied the ecology of eight species of cranes in Australia, Bhutan, China, Iran, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the US. Dr. Archibald has published dozens of research articles and book chapters on cranes and their conservation, and he has organized more than 900 researchers in 64 countries to study cranes. His more notable awards include a MacArthur Award in 1984, a Gold Medal from the World Wildlife Fund in 1985, the Audubon Society's distinguished conservationist award in 1993, and the Aldo Leopold Award for Distinction in Environment and Conservation in 2007. Dr. Archibald is planning to reduce his speaking engagements to begin work on his memoirs, so this may be one of our last opportunities to hear one of America's leading conservationists discuss his life's work. Dr. Archibald will be speaking at 7:30 p.m. at the Vali 3 Theatre at 139 Adams Street in Monte Vista, Colorado on Saturday, March 14th. For more information, please visit www.cranefest.com
