[cobirds] Recording/sonogram of Dickcissel from Canon City and comparison with one in Prowers County

I have also uploaded a recording I made of the Dickcissel I found in Canon City last week with a sonogram from Xeno-canto.org.  I have wanted to get a recording of one of the Dickcissels that come to Canon City to breed as it has been my experience that they tend to sing a song that is different from the Dickcissels I have heard singing in far eastern Colorado.  This is the first time I have uploaded a recording to Xeno-canto and getting my recording converted to the correct format, etc took a little time.  I have borrowed a recording that cobirder/recorder/vocalization specialist Nathan Pieplow did ( Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 ) of a Dickcissel in Prowers County to show the difference in the song of the Canon City Dickcissel.  I have uploaded both of these to my Birds and Nature blog

[cobirds] TRICOLORED HERON at Holcim Wetlands east of Florence--Yes

The TRICOLORED HERON  was at Holcim Wetlands this morning and it was foraging on the west side where I found it on 6-14-13 (as it seems very unlikely this is a different bird).  Since I was going to Pueblo I stopped at Holcim to check on the bird.  I ran into Lynne Miller who had just seen the heron.  By the time I got to the west side of the wetlands it was 10:30 and it took a bit for me to find the bird as it was a few hundred feet from shore foraging mostly behind a large clump of cattails.  I spotted it moving behind the cattails and it did come out into mostly full view briefly a few times but I got good views of it foraging with only a few cattails making photos more difficult.  I did get a photo that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog.  But if you go looking for it and don't see it right away be sure to wait in case it is obscured by the cattails.  Though Lynne said she saw a Green Heron, I did not see one today.

Note for anyone coming to Holcim from Pueblo, CR120 (the road the wetlands are located on) has the new bridge over the Arkansas River open so you no longer have to drive to H115 and drive back in.

On my way back from Pueblo late around 5 pm I drove by Holcim Wetlands.  Since it was lightening I stayed in my car and scoped the wetlands from a high spot in the parking lot area.  I was surprised to spot the TRICOLORED HERON foraging clearly but just barely in my view.  It was still on the west side of the wetlands and appeared close to where it had been foraging earlier.

[cobirds] Saturday Manitou Lake Sandwich Tern

Hi cobirders. My son Bob took my Forester and me to Manitou Lake .
Left 9Am and arrived at Manitou Lake 10:30AM . Fee Area at the
picnic area. With my National pass $3.

Sandwich Tern found at 10:45AM in middle of Lake on stubby tree
limb. Saw it there and flying around the lake and back to its
favorite perch the tree stubs. There for
2 hours had picnic lunch and headed to Big Johnson Reservoir sw of
the Springs to find and see the Pacific Loon. Thousands of birds
there but needed to get back home.

Great day. Nice to get a state bird and also a life bird as I had not
seen one on the Gulf coast. My first state bird in over 2 years.

[cobirds] Teller Tern and Big Johnson (El Paso) Follow-up

John Vanderpoel and I were lucky enough to spot the Manitou Lake Sandwich Tern as we drove up from Woodland Park in the early afternoon.  As we were watching it forage successfully over the small pond west of CO 67, we almost saw the bird’s demise as it dropped a small food item it had just caught right in front of a big pick-up that was barreling down the highway.  Fortunately, discretion by the tern was the better part of valor!

We then went down to Big Johnson Reservoir near Security where we found the birds posted by Mark Peterson the other day—Pacific Loon, Laughing Gull and (one) Lesser Black-backed Gull.

[cobirds] Colorado City, Pueblo Co. 6/30

Van Truan and I were looking around Colorado City, in southern Pueblo County this morning.  While looking at some butterflies and dragonflies, etc., we saw a singing male Indigo Bunting at the Diversion Gate in Colorado City, and two Peregrine Falcons there as well.  Last night, in the Wet Mountains, we saw a Common Poorwill, and saw lots of moths, which Van attacked to his lights and white sheets.

I also wanted to publicly congratulate Roger and Brenda Linfield, on finding the first for Colorado Sandwich Tern and Jeff Jones for re-finding it.  Another crazy tern for Colorado: the Sooty Tern, three Royals Terns, and now a Sandwich Tern have all made it to Colorado!  I'm guessing Elegant and Gull-billed Tern ought to be coming one of these years too.

[cobirds] Mexican Duck - Glenmere Park, Greeley (Weld Co.)

In addition to the long staying snow goose (which appears to be missing the primaries on both wings) at Glenmere Park in Greeley this afternoon , was also a male Mexican Duck. It took flight while we were observing it, but I suspect it will be back. It was hanging at the west end of the island before flying out. Lots of nesting Black-Crown Night Herons, Snowy Egrets and a few Cattle Egrets in the trees on the island too.

[cobirds] Lewis's Woodpeckers - Garfield county - 29 June

Saw two (a pair?) on the Colorado River, about 2 miles west
(downstream) of the New Castle put-in, flying back and forth across the
river. Not common in Garfield county (or anywhere else?) I don't
think. I had 2 at my house further west in the county (between Rifle
and Rulison) about 5 years ago, but not since ...

just in case anyone is working on their Garfield list :) -- it's hard
to be more precise on location, but the float from New Castle to Silt
was nice (if not really all that birdy), so that's probably your best
bet ... but the river road wasn't that far off, so one could perhaps
try that too.

[cobirds] Carpenter Ranch, Routt County, June 29th

Hello, Birders.

Twelve of us had a fine time at the Carpenter Ranch [PRIVATE], Routt County, yesterday, Saturday, June 29th. No rarities to speak of for us, but we pretty much cleaned up on all the expected specialty species of the ranch, finding:

5 Sandhill Cranes

a minimum of 11 Willow Flycatcher (an outstanding, perhaps unprecedented, breeding-season count for Colorado)

2 Veeries

5 Swainson's Thrushes

8 Gray Catbirds

3 Fox Sparrows

5 Bobolinks

Some other items of note:

a male Red-naped Sapsucker with extreme red on the head; we wondered if this bird had some Red-breasted Sapsucker ancestry

an unseen "Rufous-sided" Towhee with a funky, somewhat Eastern-ish song

Lots of Common Mergansers, including one hen with 14 chicks

Orange-crowned Warblers and Green-tailed Towhees singing on the dry hillsides

beautiful Cedar Waxwings everywhere

Thanks to the Carpenter Ranch and the Yampa River Birding Club for a great outing!

[cobirds] Red-eyed Vireo on Canon City Riverwal

There was a Red-eyed Vireo singing near the MacKenzie parking area for Canon City Riverwalk this morning.  I had been told by different birders that there was one singing in this area about a week ago nut this the first I have heard this year in this area.

There have also been Black Phoebes, Lazuli Buntings and at least one hybrid Lazuli x Indigo Bunting in this section of our Riverwalk for more than a week.

[cobirds] Laughing Gull at Lake Henry (Crowley County)

I stopped at several lakes from Lincoln to Otero Counties today.  The most interesting find was a LAUGHING GULL at Lake Henry in Crowley County.  My read is that it's a first summer gull.  It was near the ring-billed gulls, Franklin's gulls, and avocets on the west shore.

Lake Henry and Lake Meredith are both being drained and are already quite low.  Fish kill is occurring on a particularly massive scale at Lake Meredith.  It's not a pretty sight out there.  Nevertheless, both lakes are attracting large numbers of gulls and shorebirds (and, in the case of Meredith, fish eaters such as pelicans and cormorants).  Before these lakes dry up completely, I assume they will continue to have huge numbers of birds.

The appearance of yellowlegs (both kinds), willets, marbled godwits, etc., at these lakes indicates that the "fall" shorebird migration is steadily ramping up.

[cobirds] From around Longmont, Boulder/Weld

Greetings All

So, I did not do much birding today, and what I did was local, and though I missed out on yonder Sandwich Tern, there is a big smile on my face.

Also, in the wee bit of birding I did do, I found the following
2 CACKLING GEESE remain at Golden Ponds, with 1 LESSER CANADA, which WAS NOT present in late May.

And Sandstone Ranch, in the trees around the visitor center, was a very vocal GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. There was likely a second one down by the creek, but it could've been the same bird having moved 1/4 mile or so.

Also, along the creek below and to the south of the visitor center there was a male AMERICAN REDSTART singing away.

Good Birding

[cobirds] National Geographic Magazine - Last Song

For those who haven't seen the July issue of Natl Geo... An extremely disheartening but informative article by the novelist/birder Jonathan Franzen about the demise of Eurasian/African migratory birds. http://bit.ly/1ba7y5U

Marty Wolf
NW CO Spgs

By Jonathan Franzen
Photographs by David Guttenfelder

From glue-covered sticks in Egypt hang two lives, and one question: Can we stop the slaughter of songbirds migrating across the Mediterranean?

In a bird market in the Mediterranean tourist town of Marsa Matruh, Egypt, I was inspecting cages crowded with wild turtledoves and quail when one of the birdsellers saw the disapproval in my face and called out sarcastically, in Arabic: "You Americans feel bad about the birds, but you don't feel bad about dropping bombs on someone's homeland."

I could have answered that it's possible to feel bad about both birds and bombs, that two wrongs don't make a right. But it seemed to me that the birdseller was saying something true about the problem of nature conservation in a world of human conflict, something not so easily refuted. He kissed his fingers to suggest how good the birds tasted, and I kept frowning at the cages.

To a visitor from North America, where bird hunting is well regulated and only naughty farm boys shoot songbirds, the situation in the Mediterranean is appalling: Every year, from one end of it to the other, hundreds of millions of songbirds and larger migrants are killed for food, profit, sport, and general amusement. The killing is substantially indiscriminate, with heavy impact on species already battered by destruction or fragmentation of their breeding habitat. Mediterraneans shoot cranes, storks, and large raptors for which governments to the north have multimillion-euro conservation projects. All across Europe bird populations are in steep decline, and the slaughter in the Mediterranean is one of the causes.

[cobirds] Re: White-winged Crossbills, Boulder Co.

I headed out this morning seeking out the crossbills, and only found two remnant males a mile or so up the trail. One seemed to be having some issues with a nearby Clark's Nutcracker!

I stuck on the trail thanks to David's hint though, and found a White-tailed Ptarmigan, some American Pipits, and a single female Horned Lark up in the tundra. Toss in the woodpeckers and rosy-finches and it makes for a great day in the field!

The sandwich tern is currently sitting in the middle of manitou lake. There are several boats getting close, but he doesn't seem to mind.

[cobirds] Boulder County - Ovenbirds

Back during peak migration I mentioned a few Ovenbirds back in Skunk Canyon.  I had to head to the east coast for a few weeks and got back up there this morning.  Two of the three "territories" that were filled with singing back in May were still vocally active between 8-8:30 a.m. this morning.  It's a banner year for Mexican Hats on the trail and also saw/heard Yellow-breasted chats, Black-headed grosbeaks, House Wrens, Plumbeous Vireo, Lazuli Buntings and un'IDd Warblers.

Re: [cobirds] Sandwich Tern present

Favorite fishing spot is beaver pond at intersection of Hwy 67 and Painted Rocks Rd. Good photos here. Also avoids $6 fee at the lake. Fastest route from Denver is through Colorado Springs and Woodland Park. Shortest distance route is via Rt. 285.

RE: [cobirds] RFI: Birding SW Colorado

Hi everyone,

In my first post I thoughtlessly copied & pasted my target list (which I had made for my own use using 4-letter codes as shorthand) into the email without thinking to write out the names of the birds.  Here they are in “English” – sorry if they were confusing or offending to anyone!

Northern Goshawk

Virginia Rail

Western Screech-Owl

Northern Pygmy-Owl

Long-eared Owl

Sage Thrasher

Sage Sparrow

Brown-capped Rosy-Finch

Evening Grosbeak

Thanks again!

Hi all,

I'm going to be on vacation in SW Colorado this summer (July 7-13) in Montezuma County. I've been to the area before but I'd like to explore it some more. I'm planning to go to Yellowjacket Canyon, Totten Reservoir (very productive last year), and in general around the city of Mancos - are there any other locations that are definitely worth a visit?

Also, a few target birds I'm interested in are NOGO, VIRA (I do know of one spot), WESO, NOPO, LEOW, SATH, SASP, BCRF, and EVGR. Any info on where to find these would be great.

Please respond privately. Thanks and good birding!

Folks,

I have posted some pics of Colorado's first Sandwich Tern on the link below.  The SATE was fairly cooperative at Manitou Lake this afternoon, flying and feeding on both sides of Hwy 67.  The tern will roost on the snags in the middle of the tiny lake, then fly and feed in the smaller estuaries to the south.  A big 'Thank You' go to Roger and Brenda, Jeff and Mark... AWESOME!

Anyone who has been here for more than a couple of years knows that June is not boring.  Consider: Tropical Parula, White-eared Hummingbird, Hooded Oriole, Western Gull, Great Kiskadee, Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern, Bronzed Cowbird, Swallow-tailed Kite, Zone-tailed Hawk, etc...

[cobirds] El Paso county --- LAUGHING GULL

COBirders,

Early this morning I checked Big Johnson reservoir and had a non-breeding adult (I think it is an adult) LAUGHING GULL in the southeast corner of the reservoir.  It was feeding in the mud most of the time and occasionally being chased by AMERICAN AVOCETs.  Other notable species were the continuing PACIFIC LOON, three youngster BALD EAGLEs and one adult, and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLs.  This is the first time I have seen the two Lesser Black-backed Gulls at the same time.

Hoping that others can reply to me privately (jjo...@jonestc.com) with the basic plan to see black swifts at this location. I have been to the falls in the daytime before, so I am familiar with the layout. Just looking for how to go about maximizing my opportunity for sightings. Things such as; do I just sit at the top of the falls pre-sunrise or post-sunset and await the birds to come diving in? Can you view nest sites from within the chasm?

[cobirds] Sandwich Tern Search

Cobirders,

This search has begun this morning for the Sandwich Tern. Manitou Lake, Big Johnson, Chatfield, S Platte Res and McLellen have been checked with no sign of the bird.

Walbek is purportedly taking his leisure but on his way to Cherry Creek. Percival is out of town so it would be nice if someone could check Pueblo Res (no small task) and the mountain reservoirs in S Park.

Terns are strong fliers but it is likely still around somewhere. Let's leave no tern unstoned on this great find by Roger.

Thanks for the post Roger!

A check last night around 7:30pm and a look this morning from 6:30a-7:00p did not produce a tern at Manitou Lake. Perhaps one of the surrounding reservoirs in the area will tern something up. :)

At 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, Brenda and I found a breeding plumage Sandwich Tern at Manitou Lake in Teller County.  Initially, it was perched on a small snag in the middle of the lake, but we later observed it in flight.  Photos were taken by a third person who is not on cobirds.  As soon as we receive his photos, we will put them onto a website and post the url to cobirds.

[cobirds] Sandwich Tern in Teller County

At 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, Brenda and I found a breeding plumage Sandwich Tern at Manitou Lake in Teller County. Initially, it was perched on a small snag in the middle of the lake, but we later observed it in flight. Photos were taken by a third person who is not on cobirds. As soon as we receive his photos, we will put them onto a website and post the url to cobirds.
