[cobirds] Iceland Gull, Teller Pond

Folks,

This morning Steve Larson and I gulled the dead fish mud at Teller #5.  A different mix of gulls from last weekend for sure.  There were more adult Thayer's Gulls, a single, different, adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and no 'X' gulls that we could detect.  A seemingly, near perfect, 1st cycle Iceland Gull gave us and others good looks.  This bird is certainly not the same Iceland-Thiceland-thingy of last week.  It was overall paler, smaller and more uniform.  It's head and bill dainty, nearly Ring-billed Gull sized.  I have posted some photos at the link below.  We stopped by Anthem and didn't see many gulls at all.  The Sheridan and NW Tollway pond is still completely frozen.  Oh yeah, we went to Valmont...  Holy smokes ;- )

Re: [cobirds] Reminder: Gullapalooza, tomorrow, Feb. 2nd

Hey 'Loozers,

(No disrespect intended). If you are coming from the Fort Collins area, I can take up to 6 passengers in my spacious birding van. My plan is to depart Harmony Road Transportation Center (north end) at 8:00 am, make a quick stop to view the Trumpeter Swans in Loveland (this will be good to compare later with the Tundra Swans at Valmont Res), then stop at Teller Lake #5 in Boulder at about 9 am to experience the gulls feeding on the exposed dead fish – a great way to get close views through a scope at several species of common and rare gulls (e.g. Herring, Thayer's, Lesser Black-backed, perhaps Iceland, and any odd white-winged hybrid gulls that might be present, before heading to Valmont at 11:30 am where the gulls may be further away. Respond to me off-list to reserve your spot (first come-first serve; contribution for gasoline appreciated; bring lunch). We should return to Harmony Road Transport Center by 7 pm.

Incidentally, car pooling is a great way to not only save $$ on gasoline, and reduce our carbon footprint, but it will also free up parking spaces at Valmont. I would encourage other drivers from points north of the Harmony Rd. Transport Center to also meet for carpooling. I propose planned departures for 9 am and 10 am also from the north end (wear your binoculars to identify yourself as a birder), and I encourage birders from other locations (Denver, Colorado Springs, etc.) to consider doing the same (i.e. set up carpooling locations). Even Boulder County birders would be making a difference by car-pooling rather than individually driving to Valmont.

Ted, does ABA or CFO have some sort of electronic bulletin board where carpoolers can post their carpooling needs/offers for Gullapalooza?

Hello, Birders.

Just a quick reminder here that everything's a "go" for tomorrow's Gullapalooza. We'll get under way at Xcel Energy's Valmont generating station (a.k.a. "Valmont Reservoir"), Boulder County, tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 2nd, at noon. Arrive by 11:45 a.m. if you want any chance at a parking space.

Looks like we'll have great weather: sunny and mild during the afternoon. We have a fantastic slate of field trip leaders, plus we've arranged for some very nice birds to put in appearances. You don't want to miss this.

[cobirds] Redpolls/Museum of Discovery

Hi all the Redpolls are still present at the Museum.  I have seen 3 good candidates for Hoary Redpoll today.
The large flock has been there since we first saw them on the CBC count in Fort Collins on Dec. 15th. a total of 49 days.

good birding,

[cobirds] Bushtits, El Paso County

I went out to fill my unique suet feeder and when I was about six feet away a flock of
Bushtits flew in and were scavenging what was left and didn't seem to mind my presence.
Wish I had my camera.  When they left, I filled the feeder and a Downy, Chickadees and
a Flicker all came within a short time.

My friend made this suet feeder for me which is a tree log about a foot and a half long and
2 inches around.  She drilled about seven holes about the size of a quarter around it and the
birds empty it every few days but if I put out a cake size in a cage it stays there forever.  The
flock of WW Doves still comes to my platform feeder.

[cobirds] online bird sound id quiz to assist research

I am forwarding this opportunity to assist with a research project. Perhaps some Colorado birders familiar with birds in Canada might be interested in helping. I just took the quiz and there are several birds in the quiz that are found in Colorado.

Hello Fellow Birders!

For those of you who don't know me, I am a research scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and am program lead for the Spatial Ecology Program at the Centre for Northern Forest Ecosystem Research in Thunder Bay.  I am requesting your participation in an online research "quiz" to provide information on misidentification of species arising from interpretation of audio recordings, in support of forest management guide effectiveness monitoring.

The quiz is completely anonymous, and your comfort and experience with identifying birds based on vocalization is assessed through the first three questions.   The quiz is set to expire on February 8th.  If you can't do the quiz right now, perhaps set a time now in your calendar that is more convenient!

This is the link to the quiz:  http://www.cnfer.on.ca/SEP/quiz/quiz.html , and clicking on the link will load the flash (.swf) based quiz, with the vocalizations embedded.  It may take a moment to load.  Also, you may need to click on your browser security bar to activate embedded (flash) ActiveX content.  If you stop the quiz by closing the web page, you can restart the quiz where you left off by simply opening the link again, and navigating to your last question with the Next button.

If you know of others that might do very well on this quiz, I would appreciate you forwarding this email to them.

Additional info:

The quiz is intentionally short with only 20 identification questions, and with only 30 seconds to complete each question.    This simulates some of the actual working conditions of interpreting a large block of recordings within a limited time frame (and where a vocalization may be heard only once) but also makes the quiz more convenient for busy professionals because only 15-20 minutes is required to complete the quiz.  The list of possible answers is based on our research (and other published material) of which species sound most similar, so the quiz is relatively difficult.  The quiz includes relatively common species from Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) 8 and 12, but most should be familiar to birders across Canada.  The full list of bird name codes used in this quiz is provided below.  We ask that you DO NOT take the quiz more than once, as this will invalidate results.

This request to participate was sent to experienced birders across Canada based on my network of birding professionals, and includes those who have their own networks.  The intent is to span a range of skill levels including people who are highly skilled and with lots of current experience identifying birds by vocalization, to those who have less experience, and are perhaps (currently) a bit rusty.

List of species (codes) used in the quiz.  Full names are provided in the quiz:
AMKE, AMRE, AMRO, ATTW, BAWW, BBWA, BCCH, BHVI, BLBW, BRCR, BTBW, BTNW, CAWA, CERW, CHSP, CMWA, COYE, CSWA, DEJU, GCKI, HETH, LEFL, MAWA, MERL, NAWA, NOFL, NOPA, NOWA, OCWA, PIWA, PIWO, RBGR, RBNU, RCKI, REVI, SCTA, SWSP, TEWA, WBNU, WIWA, WOTH, YBFL, YBSA, YRWA, YTVI, YWAR.

Your participation is very much appreciated!!

Sincerely,
