Re: [cobirds] Re: Purple Finch - Jeffco - Golden

Josh,
Thanks for the post and picture.  The bird shown looks the same as the birds at my feeder.

All,

To piggy-back on Ira's post, there are at least 4 different Purple Finches that have been seen in Larimer County today.  One male at a feeder in Loveland, a female type at a residence near Horsetooth Mountain Park, another female type at a residence in west Fort Collins as well as a female type near Southridge Golf course in SE Fort Collins.  Myself and several others got eyes on the one in west Fort Collins.  It would appear that any Purple Finches in the area are on the move as these were all new observations today.  Birders should keep their eyes open for this species on the front range this weekend.  I have pasted the link to my Ebird checklist with one photo of the west Fort Collins bird.

Birders,
This morning at 9 am when I was putting out the feeders and refilling, I had 3 female birds that at 1st struck me as Cassin's Finches but this isn't the weather that I normally get any Cassin's. I didn't want to flush them as they were in the seed tray and then went to the water so I stood there w/o binos or a camera.  I looked at them for several minutes and noted that they were darker than I remembered Cassin's and bigger headed.  They were heavily streaked all the way down their sides and the streaking was much more distinct than House Finches.  The head pattern really stood out.
After they left the water they flew into the trees across the street.  I'll watch for them.
