[cobirds] gray jay/Parker/Douglas

My daughter had a gray (Canada, to us long time birders) jay in her yard in Parker yesterday...a ways southwest of the intersection of Parker Road and Mainstreet.

[cobirds] Re: Another ID?

Thanks so much to all of you who answered! My books definitely failed me this time! (Okay. It might have been user error.) The yellow-rumped was the first one my bird app showed me, but the pictures didn't look anything like mine, so I dismissed it. That'll teach me. LOL.

Thanks again!

Hi Amy!
Don't worry about asking questions--birding is hard, and I think I speak on behalf of the CObirds community when I say we love helping newer birders learn the many facets of bird identification!
You have photographed a non-breeding plumage Yellow-rumped Warbler. Note that the throat is pale yellow (adult "Audubon" Yellow-rumped Warblers would have a much fuller yellow throat. There is another subspecies of Yellow-rumped Warbler called "Myrtle" that have white throats instead of yellow throats). Also note that the "armpit" is yellow--a mark that points to Yellow-rumped Warbler. The only other non-male breeding plumage warbler that has yellow armpits is the American Redstart, but those birds are much darker on their backs.
The white eye arcs, dull gray back, dull wing bars, and dark streaks along the flanks are all marks that point toward non-breeding Yellow-rumped Warbler. Although your photo doesn't show it, these birds flash yellow on their rumps, hence their name (and their nickname "butterbutt").
Come spring, you'll get to enjoy seeing lots of these guys in their gorgeous adult breeding plumages!

The birds are happy, and so am I

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/30/20

Our slowest day of the season; we banded only 15 birds.  It did not take away from our primary task of the morning, which was to work with a crew from CBS that is doing a feature story based on the reporting of birds dying around the time of the big storm. In addition to learning about the education and science of our banding program, they interviewed Arvind Panjabi, BCR's Avian Conservation Scientist, about this issue and the work he did on the Three Billion Birds Gone study.

Hoping things pick up again tomorrow!  Here's the breakdown of the 15 birds:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 4
Hermit Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Spotted Towhee 1
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 3
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1

I believe our Covid-limited visitor program is close to sold out for the balance of the banding season.  There may be a couple of slots for individual people.  For more information go to www.birdconservancy.org/bandingregister

Nice find Alec!

Thanks for sharing as well. If it looks like it headed north there is a small grove of pine trees on that side that can be accessed via Pierce street that it may have gone to.
Here are coordinates for you or anyone else that wants to try.

Re: [cobirds] RFI: Pelican Point Nelson's Sparrow

Hi Eric! (sharing with cobirds for others who may have the same question, I know I did when I headed down there)

You'll want to park at the East Boat Ramp in Cherry Creek State Park. There is a smaller upper lot with a vault toilet that is convenient. From there, walk down to the shoreline and follow it to the inlet. Bird seems to favor the grasses on the opposite side of the inlet, so bring your water shoes. It's fairly shallow but a bit mucky.

Hope that helps!

[cobirds] Turkey Vultures - JeffCo, Douglas

We reported 175 migrating Turkey Vultures Sunday afternoon, and that Karen Metz, Castlewood Canyon State Park raptor monitor went to the part Monday morning and counted 174 leaving the roost there.

Yesterday Cheryl Thompson reported that, on Sunday afternoon about 6 pm, she saw 175 Turkey Vultures moving south over her home in Arvada. I wonder where they might have gone to roost (she says probably not Crown Point).

[cobirds] New Hotspot for Hohnholz Lakes Area

Joe Roller has kindly created an eBird hotspot for the Hohnholz Lakes State Wildlife Area Campground in northwestern Larimer County. If anyone has historical eBird checklists from this SWA that are reported using a personal location, its now possible for you to change the location of your lists to a public hotspot!! I would strongly suggest doing that, as I am interested in seeing how many species have been detected at this SWA, and it is helpful to have data condensed on one webpage where it is easier to find and evaluate. Link to the new hotspot is here: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L11529218
If you have submitted multiple lists using the same personal location and you don't want to change the location on each individual list, you can easily edit your personal location so that it merges into the new hotspot. Simply go to "My eBird," click "Manage My Locations" and hit the "Edit" button next to your personal location. This will give you multiple options, Select "Merge" and then click on the new hotspot. All of the lists you have submitted at that personal location will now be in the hotspot.
Good birding everyone, I can't wait to see the hotspot grow!!

[cobirds] Mute Swan/Weld

Hi all

Saw Dick Maxwell eBird report on swans he saw in NW Greeley on Saturday.

Sunday, I had three "wild" :-) Mute Swan along F Street west of 35th Avenue yesterday. Traveling west on F Street from 35th Ave, drive by Osprey nest and you'll see small parking area on south just past the housing area. First gravel pit is there on north--one Mute Swan there. Go farther west and you'll see second and third ponds on north. The Mute Swan pair was in second pond yesterday. Generally, I see the pair in the third pond. The single swan I have seen in various ponds around Greeley-including the small gravel pit on north side (of road) of Linn Grove Cemetery (where the two domestic Mute Swans live (clipped wings) in small pond).

[cobirds] Re: Oregon junco, Larimer County, nr. Storm Mountain

I had a junco yesterday, too, while weather was windy and drizzly and 45 degrees. They were here just briefly, so I did not ID variety. Sedalia, Douglas County, about 5900 feet elevation, in the West Plum Creek valley They were not around today, hopefully they warmed up and rejoined their group. This is early for juncos around here.

[cobirds] Raptor Kettle/Weld

Hi all

Someone mentioned kettle previously, a fun thing yesterday was a kettle of raptors, at least 27 or so, high above our house. We could pick out multiple Bald Eagles (various ages, 3-4), Golden Eagles (at least two adults), Swainson's Hawks (6) Red-tailed Hawks (5 or so), Turkey Vultures (4), Ferruginous Hawks (2) and some unidentified ones. We just happened to be looking up at the right time ...

[cobirds] Brown Thrasher, central Bldr Cnty (dry plains)

Second time in 16 years: energetic bird foraging like a flicker for what looks like tiny grubs in pine duff. I got very excited, thinking I could increase by one our cumulative yardlist, but I had forgotten: a thrasher visited the yard in 2008. So the list stays at 122.

The yard is full of hungry birds this morning, including altitude migrants (Scrub Jay, Steller's Jay, White-crowned Sparrows, Townsend's Solitaire, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Wilson's Warbler).

Yesterday at dusk, right after I remarked that I hadn't seen a hummingibrd for 3 days, a tiny young Broad-tailed hummer appeared on one feeder, and spent 10 shivery minutes stoking up for the night, one sip at a time. I haven't seen it today, but hope it survived and headed further south. I plan, as recommended, to keep the feeders out for a week after the last sighting.

[cobirds] Mile High Stadium and the storm

I have been watching birds from Mile High Stadium since 1973.  Yesterday, added a few to my list.
Entering the stadium I saw 4 pigeons.  Not auspicious.
My daughter and three grandchildren sat in the west stands on the 50 yard line.  This made any viewing to the west impossible.
No birds.
Late in the game, a "biting" north wind came through (at 50 degrees?)  Just in front of a new small bank of clouds...two circling red tailed hawks, then two ravens, two Cooper's hawks, then a kestrel .  Then clouds and tiny raindrops of what I believe had been melted snow.

This doesn't mean to expect great birds tomorrow morning, this just means that conditions are correct in this case for birds to be low enough to the ground that you may be able to hear them overnight.

At least put your head out the door and see if you hear anything, then run from the cold back into bed.

[cobirds] The Prophesy of Guarente, or, Migrants Galore Today in e. Boulder County

Hey, all.

Well, Bryan's prediction was spot-on for the Greenlee/Waneka/Hecla complex of eastern Boulder County. It was cool and cloudy this Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27, with new arrivals galore. Here's a summary:

* 2 ring-necked ducks and another Aythya, the first diving ducks there this season for me
* 2 gorgeous juvenile red-necked phalaropes
* 1 adult sharp-shinned hawk, first-of-season for me for the site
* 1 mountain chickadee
* 7 ruby-crowned kinglets, a high count
5 red-breasted nuthatches, also a high count
1 Townsend solitaire, first of season
1 hermit thrush, first of season
10 lesser goldfinches, some of which were probably arrivals overnight
10 chipping sparrows and a couple of Spizella spuhs
1 Oregon junco (with a tinge of pink-sided, it seemed)
12 white-crowned sparrows, all of them apparently gambelii
1 Lincoln sparrow
7 orange-crowned warblers
100+ Audubon warblers (didn't see any myrtles in the mix)
15+ Wilson warblers
2 Townsend warblers
1 candidate black-throated green x Townsend warbler

Thanks, Bryan, for the exhortation to get out and find stuff!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, September 27

We opened at 6:40 (as usual) and had a couple of decent runs, catching 22 birds.  You will see from the breakdown that the species are similar to what we've been getting the last week, so nothing unusual.  But we anticipated having a very good day, as recently the number of birds has been increasing as the morning went on, with 10ish being the busiest time.  But about 8 a.m. the cold wind picked up and we were forced to do a very quick close.  Here's a breakdown of the 22 birds:

House Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 5
Hermit Thrush 3
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Wilson's Warbler 2
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 7
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1

45 minutes ago, while re-potting hummingbird plants, Urling heard migrating cranes. Over a half-hour, at least 4 flocks of 50-100 cranes flew over our house as they circled south. Quite high up and hard to find and to hear, under the gray clouds.
But then - the most amazing sight: tens of Turkey Vultures started pouring over the cliff north of our house, heading south to a place where all of them started circling (searching, we suppose, for better air currents). We watched them for 15 minutes; we estimate 130 or more passed over. Probably more like 175-200 vultures. We watched them for at least 15 minutes. A couple of tardy ones came by 15 minutes later as I type this message.
Well worth standing in the cold temperatures & wind to watch this enchanting spectacle.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Migration Weather: Sunday Forecast

Thank you Donna for the report. This kind of information is really great to hear about. Knowing the shift in species numbers as well as individual numbers is very good to know. Congrats on your lifer.

The difference in the change from the south side of the lake to the north side might be meteorologically driven. It can depend on the wind direction, but not always. The habitat can also play an important role.

Thanks
Bryan

I have to share how dramatic the change in bird numbers and number of species present was this morning at Standley Lake's Loon Lake (on the northeast end of the Standley Lake Open Space in Jeffco). Loon Lake has had species counts under 10 for many weeks. This morning I had 17, including a juvenile Cedar Waxwing! I bird this pond several times a week and have never seen one here before. Also, the sheer number of birds was about 8-10x higher than it's been in a long time and there was a tremendous amount of singing and activity. It was so fun!

I finally dragged myself away and moved on to the north shore, where I found a Tennessee Warbler - lifer! Not quite the dramatic increase in birds on the norht shore as at Loon Lake, but still a good variety. Location details and photos of the TEWA are in the eBird checklist

Thank you so much for sharing these weather events with CO Birds.

[cobirds] Re: Nelson's Sparrow, Cherry Creek SP, Arapahoe Co.

Sounds intriguing. BUT - nowhere can I figure out where to find 'Pelican Point.'
Could someone please enlighten me.

[cobirds] Re: Migration Weather: Sunday Forecast

[cobirds] Odd dipper behavior

Location: east side of the Park Range (Jackson County) at about 9,000'.

At a small cascade (Big Creek Falls),  Emily spotted a bird on an evergreen branch about 8 or 10' above the creek - the bird mostly hidden by needles and shadow.  We assumed it was one of numerous robins we'd seen.  As we pulled out binocs, we could see the bird doing familiar bobbing.  Turned out to be a dipper.   It then flew to a rock near the cascade - it was a juvenile (I've noted juvenile dippers seemingly unsure about swift water before).  After a few moments, the dipper flew downstream where we lost it in copious deadfall across the creek.

We're curious - has anyone else ever seen a dipper perched in a tree or other vegetation?

I'm happy to announce that the Northern Cardinal spotted last month at Orchard Hills Park continues! It has changed location from its original spot and is now hanging out in a different russian olive located here 39.6124032, -104.8802707.
I also found a Tennessee Warbler a few hundred feet south of that point in some thickets overhanging the creek.
The hotspot is now at 99 species! Help me find #100!
