[cobirds] Fort Collins City Park including Sheldon Lake and Grandview Cemetery (Larimer) on 28Feb2018

Grandview Cemetery

Great Horned Owl female is on the traditional nest as of today.  Two birds seen in a nearby spruce two days ago, so this initiation of egg laying and incubation was anticipated.  She may have moved into the nest yesterday.  This nest has failed the last two springs so here's hoping for success this year.

Not much else going on at present at the cemetery other than the usuals.  No crossbills, no sapsucker, no kinglets, no bushtits of late.  Bald Eagles are seen overhead most days.  The red Eastern Screech-Owl appears to have been absent for a few weeks at the end of 2017-beginning of 2018.  Somewhat surprisingly, it was reported in mid-Feb and activity by small birds all upset on 2/25 makes me believe the bird is back in its original cavity at times but not every day, and not showing itself very much at all.  Construction activity in the roost tree area has been problematic and more is scheduled for this spring-summer (part of the cemetery master plan to expand the capacity for deposit of cremains, nothing any of us can do about it), so not sure what the prospects are for this bird.  Too bad, because it is a beauty.  Those of us lucky enough to have seen it should just be grateful for having had the opportunity.

Pygmy Nuthatches have been seen in the neighborhood east of the cemetery (alley between Grandview Ave and Frey Ave) but they were not present today.  Think these are some of the birds that came down into the cemetery late last summer and have been the first to winter in the area in my experience.  They have persisted by visiting feeders and getting seeds from Austrian Pine, not a traditional host.

Sheldon Lake in City Park

Lately I have been checking nearby Sheldon Lake at City Park southeast of the cemetery to monitor waterfowl turnover and action related to ice melt and fish kill becoming available to eagles, corvids and gulls.  Very surprising today was a RED-NECKED GREBE.  Hope it sticks around so more folks can see it.  This is first one I have ever seen within Fort Collins proper.  Other Red-necked Grebes for me in Larimer County have been at much bigger bodies of water like Hamilton Reservoir near Rawhide Power Plant and Timnath Reservoir.  No doubt others have found this species at other water bodies like Fossil Creek Reservoir, etc.  The Sheldon bird today was diving for crayfish (for more about birds eating crayfish, see "Colorado Birds" (Vol48 No2, Spring 2014, "The Hungry Bird" column)).  I was relieved to see the author included Red-necked Grebe as one of the species know to eat these crustaceans.  The best way to view this bird, assuming it sticks for a day or more, is to park on the north side of the lake (one block n of Mulberry Street between Shields and Taft) and walk the paved path that skirts the eastern and south edge of the associated City Park Swimming Pool.  Today the bird was east of paddle boat docks that extend from near the southeastern corner of the pool.

[cobirds] DFO Big Year April field trips go live tomorrow

The Bohemian Waxwings at Bobcat Ridge provided DFO its 142nd species for Big Year 2018 (all species recorded on planned DFO field trips in CO)! You can check out our progress on the DFO page, although the total showing is down two from reality (missing the Bohemian and Fox Sparrow - problem to be resolved soon).

DFO's April field trips will be posted and open for registration tomorrow morning. Check here: https://dfobirds.org/FieldTrips/UpcomingTrips.aspx

You will see some overnight outings in April visiting southeast and southwest, and other exciting trips in pursuit of great birding and new species for the year.

There are still some spaces available on some March trips, too.

[cobirds] Sagebrush Sparrows Plus

Hi all:

A group of us headed to Antonito to chase Sagebrush Sparrows (Conejos County) and were not disappointed on this blustery day. We counted no less than 11 east of Antonito. This established the earliest spring record for the species in the San Luis valley, beating the previous date of Feb 29th.

To see them, go to Antonito and take road G east until Road F joins from the SE. Take F and start watching for the next 2-3 miles and you should catch them. Some were singing today. WOW.

Other great birds for the day included about 4-5,000 Sandhill Cranes at the Monte Vista NWR (Rio Grande), hundreds of Cackling geese, 1 Greater White-fronted Goose at the turnouts, a female Hooded Merganser on the auto tour loop, the hybrid Greylag X Canada, and 6 Cinnamon Teal.

We missed the Rosy-finches at Hostetlers, but had a nice consolation of Merlin! (which is why there were no Rosy-finches!)

Re: [cobirds] Cinnamon teal, Boulder County

A pair of Cinnamon Teal (mating, no less) were also seen yesterday at Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo County), below the dam, around noon.  Gadwall and Buffleheads were the other main attractions.

[cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon

Monday 2/26 I spotted the Yellow-billed Loon on the Douglas County side of Chatfield Reservoir. Most likely the South Platte Park Reservoir Loon. Chatfield was frozen, at that time, on all but the viewing from the marina spit and marina area. Diane Roberts, Lone Tree, CO

[cobirds] FOS American White Pelican, Arapahoe County

Hi all,

I was surprised to see a lone American White Pelican (FOS) on the east side of Cherry Creek Reservoir this afternoon. When I saw it, it was standing on the ice near Dixon Grove, but I heard it had been swimming and feeding in the water earlier. The reservoir was mostly ice, with areas of water.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Larimer County

Today at 10:45, I discovered 6 Bohemian Waxwings along the entrance road to Bobcat Ridge Natural Area southwest of Masonville. They were approximately 75-80 yards (half way between county road and the castle) from the main county road. They were frequenting the tops of the budding trees along the creek. When I left, there were about 8 people with scopes and cameras looking at them.

[cobirds] Correction ,Common Grackles, 2/26, Great-tailed Grackle

Nick Komar sent me a note that he saw a flock of Great-tailed Grackle in the same area[136th Av and I-25] where I saw the Grackles yesterday. Going over 60mph and having the birds  flying pretty far away, probably altered my perception. They appeared to me ,at first, to be much smaller in length than  American Crows. They probably were Great--tailed Grackles.

Thanks,

Tina Jones

[cobirds] Two Greater White-fronted Geese Adams Co

[cobirds] Common Grackles,2/25/2018, Adam County

While driving south on I-25, yesterday, Mary Fran O'Connor and I, saw around 130, Common Grackles flying from the east, going west over the highway. The area was near 136th ave.

I know there have been a few Common Grackle reports, but I thought this date might be a bit early.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Ross's geese at Frederick Rec Center, Weld County

Tim & I visited the reservoir in Frederick at 11:40 am today after reading the 2/24 posting by Bill Kaempfer & were astounded by the number of white-cheeked geese. We estimated about 8000, and then another 1 or 2000 flew in.  They were on the ice & also in a small area of open water. One Snow Goose was sitting on the ice when we arrived, and then 2 Ross's geese and 2 Snow Geese(white morph) flew in with the white-cheeks and stayed near each other. We were sure of the ID because we could see the grin patch on the larger Snow Geese when all 4 were in the same binocular field. Quite a spectacle.

[cobirds] 17 Red Crossbill, Colo Spgs, El Paso Co, Monday

Hey COBirders,

I caught some new mountain birds in my yard in NW Colo Spgs this morning, including a couple new Mountain Chickadees (like 60 now, this season), a SY Steller's Jay, (#9 this season), and two of the 17 Red Crossbills that visited the maple tree in my yard, M and F.

Very cool, but not surprisingly, their bills are pretty sharp!!! Pics below.

Can anyone point me of references that might help me separate the crossbills types by BILL LENGTH?  I saw a simple chart in my Sibley, but both of these were off the scale he had, 18 and 20 mm long (female longer). I can't hear well enough to separate them by call - all I heard was distress calls in the hand.

Thanks,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Goshawk - Arapahoe

This morning (2/25), my wife and I took our dogs on a long walk from our home, through deKoevend, and up the High Line Canal Trail to S. Broadway in Littleton (Arapahoe). As we passed through Milliken Park, we encountered a Northern Goshawk. The enormous bird -- I suspect a female -- first glided low over the canal away from us (headed west). At that point, I didn't yet know it was a Goshawk -- just a large, slate-backed, broad-winged bird. I looked for it and its perch, but couldn't find it. Thankfully, the bird soon flew low over the canal trail, directly over us, giving good looks at white eyebrow, dark head, and pale belly. It was a thrilling moment, to have the bird so close, but it ended too soon -- as the bird disappeared again, out of view behind neighborhood trees, in a hidden perch, or perhaps just gone. We didn't see it again during our return walk, nor did I find it on a return visit to the park around 11:30.
