Spooked up a nesting common nighthawk (2 chicks) on my north slope, he/she flew downslope 30 yards,
And fluttered around with mouth wide open. I backed off immediately, but then snuck back above and peered
Down and spotted the two chicks. Some broken egg shells nearby (bad housekeeping?), and the ‘nest’ was just
A random spot in the tree litter, about 3 feet from the base of an open ponderosa pine.
3 species of hummers around currently (Black-chinned is tough here), and red crossbills, as well as the usual
Foothills birds (including hairy woodpeckers who think they are hummingbirds).
Call if you want to come by and sit on the deck; I’m retired, so usually home.
