[cobirds] More Spring Arrivals - Broomfield, Westminster, Boulder

All:
Flowering trees and greenery seems earlier than last year.  Most species seem to be on time.  The following were seen in Broomfield, Northglenn, Westminster, Lafayette, and Boulder areas:

Double Crested Cormorants - numbers increasing
Black Crowned Night Heron
Snowy Egret
American Avocet
Cinnamon Teal
Blue Winged Teal
Green Winged Teal
Pied Billed Grebe
Wood Duck
American White Pelican - only a few so far
Swainson's Hawk
Common Grackle - numbers rapidly increasing
Brewer's Blackbird
Say's Phoebe - numbers increasing
Cooper's Hawk
White Crowned Sparrow - still present at lower elevations
Killdeer - numbers increasing
Spotted Towhee - numbers increasing - mostly males
Red-Winged Blackbird - large male flocks still coming through;  many males still in winter plumage
Virginia Rail
Sora

Some notes:
Great Horned Owl immatures are 1/2 to 3/4 grown already - three nest sites observed
Red Tailed Hawk - watched a female bring a 4 1/2 long bullsnake to a nest site
Bald Eagle - Food exchanges at nest sites
Golden Eagle - being attacked by red tailed hawk
Colorado Chorus Frogs - active by the hundreds in marshes and vernal ponds
Western Painted Turtle - some areas have dozens resting on logs and rocks
Snakes - are out and present, but no rattlesnakes yet observed
Great Blue Heron - 3 active nests at Metzger Farms (Westminster), and five nest sites at Sawhill \ Walden (Boulder)
Black Billed Magpie - nest building and incubation underway.
Mink - seen at Anthem Lakes District, Broomfield
Muskrat - Northglenn, Boulder, and Broomfield
Red Fox - in my backyard (all winter long and into spring)

Lots of insects out - including grasshoppers, butterflies, and even honeybees

Wildflowers - scant - purple mustard, cranesbill, dandelion, and Oregon grape, and others.

Note:  major construction continues at Walden \ Sawhills - roads, paths, and parking areas are being rebuilt.  Several large sections are closed to the public.  Check with City of Boulder Open Space and Boulder County Open Space for closure areas, before you go down there, and become disappointed with closed areas.   No idea when the projects will be completed.
