[cobirds] Snow Goose Hidden Lake Adams Co.

Spotted one Snow Goose from the West side of the lake (parking lot at 68th and Sheridan). Tons of Canada and Cackling Geese.
Also to my surprise, one lone domestic goose, possibly a domestic Graylag x Swan Goose hybrid? ... near some Mallards. It had a bright orange bill, was mostly white, but some dusky brownish gray. Too far away for any decent photo.

[cobirds] Ken Caryl Valley birds, JeffCo

Yesterday 12/29 I found a male Varied Thrush in Douglas-fir forest in the upper watershed of Massey Draw in the Ken Caryl Ranch foothills open space. [Note: there is no public access to this area]. The bird flushed up as I came nearby, paused on a branch for about 30 seconds, and then it flew on upslope. Later I heard a few of its fluted hum song phrases drifting down my way. A cooperative Nor. Pygmy-Owl was also noted on the same outing. An iPhone recording of the owl is uploaded to the eBird checklist below.

This morning 12/30 a flurry of bird activity around my home was brought to an abrupt end when a Prairie Falcon zoomed in at rooftop level and took a Red-winged Blackbird. A blackbird flock had been loitering on my neighbors roof and they flushed with the falcon's sudden appearance, and one was snagged. I'm thankful the falcon looped back around toting the blackbird so I could confirm the ID of the predator...it was all a blur in the moment of the kill. I've had Prairie flying over my home are a few times before, but this was the first I've had "down on the deck" much like an Accipiter.

Lesser Goldfinches continue in numbers at multiple spots in the Ken Caryl Valley, and Ruby-crowned Kinglets are still frequently in evidence. I had three RCKIs in my yard at the same time yesterday afternoon! They are attracted to the suet feeders.

[cobirds] Joe Himmel

Joe was an amazing man.  When he retired from teaching he took up birding and was an awesomely fast learner.  With the help of Jerry Cairo (from whom a lot of us learned many things) he quickly became an expert, particularly in birding by ear.  In addition to the first and early records for Fulvous Whilstling-duck,
Eurasian Collard-dove, Common Ground-dove as Dave and Joe mentioned he was among the first to see and identify Glossy Ibis when others discounted the idea they were in Colorado.  He also picked out the songs of White-eyed Vireos at Riverside Reservoir and Crow Valley before most of us had seen that species in Colorado.  He saw the Henslow's Sparrow at Red Lion (2nd Colorado record).  When the Baikal Teal showed up in Evergreen he was asked to research the report that some individuals of that species had escaped from a place near Greeley.  He ultimately reported back that it may have happened but the place in question was owned by a reputed mob figure and Joe felt that too much interest in that person's activities could lead to problems.  An incident I still laugh about occurred when Joe, Jerry Cairo and I were on our way to the Jumbo Reservoir area very early one morning.  We stopped at the Atwood exit off of Interstate 76 at a gas station/coffee shop now closed. Jerry asked for a coffe to go and was given what must have been a 30 or 36 ounce monster cup.  Joe's eyes sort of bugged out and he said "my gosh, don't you have something smaller?"  The waitress said "sure" and gave him a cup the size of what you get samples in at the grocery store, I guess about 3 ounces.  We all stared at that and Jerry burst out laughing and could not stop, he thought it was a joke.  The waitress was perfectly straight-faced however and Jerry finally wheezed 'Don't worry Joe you can have some of mine, I've got plenty."  Joe was always a fun guy to be with.  Bill Prather, Longmont

[cobirds] Joe

Those of us who knew Joe Himmel will always remember him as the kindest of souls who was respectful of everything: us, habitats, landowners and most of all, the birds.  He loved warblers.  I believe he was the first among us to see a Common Ground-Dove and Fulvous Whistling-Duck on Colorado soil.  Anybody who visits the ponds on Weld CR59 s of the old Monfort feedlot e of Greeley, or Norma's Grove nw of Crow Valley, in large measure has Joe to thank for helping put those places on our map.  I saw my first Colorado Snowy Owl at Riverside Reservoir because he told me it was a good place to go.  I cringe when I hear somebody start a COBIRDS post with "there are no records in eBird of.....", because there were a lot of birds and birders before eBird.  Joe and the things he saw bear testimony.  That makes eBird no less powerful a database but should remind us it is nevertheless very incomplete, the filters imperfect, and thru no fault of Tony or anybody else, they always will be.  His passing reminds me anew the world didn't start with one institution, person or technology coming on the scene.  He connects us to an earlier Colorado avifauna that was just as real as the myriad species counted on this year's CBCs.  We need not wring our hands that Joe and his many observations might go wherever we go when we cease breathing.  We just need to remember his humility and apply it to our thinking about our year-end number, our particular style of birding, the collective knowledge of us birders lucky enough to still be birding, and even our birding tools, however technologically savvy they might be.  Joe didn't worry if he was going out the door with everything charged up and what the some alert or digest said was present according to the latest intel.  He just went out the door, probably figured out where he wanted to go after he left the house, and thoroughly enjoyed whatever birds he came across.  And in that mode, probably because of that mode, he saw a ton of birds.

Today we should all listen to a Chopin nocturne, drink a cup of tea, daydream of seeing a Blackburnian next spring at our patch, maybe even shed a tear -  in Joe's honor.

[cobirds] Nest-building by Eurasian Collared Doves

Interesting thread. I hadn't seen many Eurasian Collated Doves (aka the B-52s) around my yard lately. Around Thanksgiving they started appearing. Usually a pair; sometimes 3 or 4. Yesterday I was out in the backyard and started hearing the whooo-whooo-whooo calls. Lo and behold, they were not only whooo-ing, but making whoopie in the junipers as well. I think there are the beginnings of a nest there too. Ah, Winter.

[cobirds] Remembering Joe

Hi

Years ago Joe and I we're roommates on a birding trip to Grand Manan, NS.. Joe became infatuated with the smoky, aroma of the tea I was drinking, Lapsong Suchong (SP?). It was impossible not like Joe. He was one of the most congenial birders I've known. One would seek Joe out just to be with him. When I have cup of that tea now, it will be like sharing a cup with Joe.
