Re: [cobirds] Walden Ponds, Saturday morning

Two things struck me in Richard's report. First, I made a brief stop at Teller Lake 5 this morning and noticed the same preponderance of Green-winged Teal in the mix of ducks. Second was the presence of 8 Killdeer. I also had 2 Killdeer along Crane Hollow Road yesterday. Killdeer are scarce in Boulder County during the winter, and these birds are almost certainly new arrivals either returning or moving through in migration. Interestingly, March seems to be the month when Killdeer numbers pick up.

I went out to Walden at 9:30 this morning and spent an hour checking the ponds with a friend from Boulder Bird Club before the precip got going.  Didn't find any early migrants, but there were differences in the birds present today from what I'd seen there on Sunday and Monday mornings:

Many more Green-winged Teal (45)
Significantly less Gadwall (17)
More Wigeon (9)
The small flock of 6 Ring-necked Ducks was gone, as were the Shovellers.  The Hooded Mergansers (18) were still present, as were the 4 Great Blue Herons.  There were still Red-winged Blackbirds on territory in the cattails, but no flocks in the trees as there had been.
Only shorebird was a single Killdeer.
