Hi everyone,
Yesterday during the blizzard I saw Red Crossbills in the pines outside my window in Boulder, but they flew before I could get outside to record them. This morning, the second time I looked, I found about five of them in the same trees. I took a quick recording with my phone, and then they flew off again.
Spectrographic analysis shows that the flock of five birds contained the expected Type 2 and Type 5 Red Crossbills, but also a big surprise -- an eastern Type 10 individual. Crossbill expert Tim Spahr corroborated the identification. I thought that it might be a first state record for Colorado, but then it turned out that Nick Moore had recorded one on January 15, half a mile from here.
So, keep an eye out for crossbills, and if you see or hear any, whip out that phone right away and get a recording!
