[cobirds] Common loon on Pine Lake

In case you go on the road from Pine, on Rte. 285,  towards Buffalo Creek:

   Yesterday we stopped at Pine Valley Ranch Park  (Jefferson Co. Open Space) on our way back from cutting our Christmas tree, and took a walk around Pine Lake (actually a reservoir)   -  it's partially iced up but there is a large area of open water, and a close look at the bird sitting in the middle of it revealed a Common Loon.   The bird was preening vigorously, not moving much; the lobed, pink feet were very much in evidence.  We were able to observe it for about 15 minutes, and it was still there when we left.  This was about 12:30 pm. on Friday, December 3.

    Perhaps the scenery there reminded this bird of its Northwoods home.

[cobirds] Bushtit Blitz, Denver County

This morning at work, Hampden Branch of the Denver Public Library, as I usually do I was siting in the car in the parking lot listing to the birds and watching them. I usualy arrive a bit early so this is what I do to decompress from a tough commute. Today a a supper flock of Bushtits came flying out of the pine tree into the small chary tree near my car. I counted as they flew by, and kept count. I got 31 Bushtits, I have never seen so many in a flock before. I got 20 some before but not this many. That little line of them, four in a group followed by nothing followed by four more, kept going. They were heading south in a hurry.

I usual call a group like this a Bushtit Blitz, mostly because it sound cool, and it really is kinda a blitz. Not an unusual sighing but pretty good when you are not planing on a major birding trip and just sitting in the car.

[cobirds] Huerfano Co. Black-legged Kittiwake Dec 1st

Van Truan and I saw a juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake at Horseshoe Lake at Lathrop State Park, Huerfano County, 1 December, late this afternoon.  Other highlights from Lathrop State Park: a male Barrow's Goldeneye, a late Gray Catbird, and the continuing Cape May Warbler.

[cobirds] Continuing Denver Redpolls are actually in Jeffco

Hi All,

There has been a bunch of reports about the Common Redpolls first listed by Chris Wood about a week ago. He listed them correctly in Jeffco and not in Denver. The border gets a  little wonky down there, but if you throw a pin out where the birds are being viewed they are actually in Jeffco.

Not sure if its a big deal or not, but probably better to have accurate locations for these birds. Or perhaps I'm incorrect on this matter- if so, please respond.
