Re: [cobirds] Bird Finder

Hey guys,
The BirdsEye app I've been using for years ties into your (and everybody else's) eBird data to show you what species have been seen nearby AND what nearby species you need for your life or year list. With each species, it shows a graph of peak occurrence/adundance by month. It is a monthly subscription but well worth it to the traveling birder. Its filters allow you to set for sightings within the last week, 2 weeks, or month and within 1 mile, 5 miles, 10 miles, 25 miles or 50 miles. There are photos and sounds in addition to the abundance graphs, and locations aren't restricted to hotspots. There are packs to purchase that open it up to world birds too. I have no connection to the app developer but am just an extremely satisfied customer. Check it out!

Or if you want to find a Chukar on the western slope in June:

It does appear that it is limited to showing eBird hotspots.  Clicking on one will take you to the eBird hotspot.  The feature is similar to the eBird species maps, but it does give you a frequency/confidence that eBird does not.  However, it does lack showing all non-hotspot locations that you'd find on eBird.

[cobirds] Pueblo Neotropic Cormorant update 3/31

The immature Neotropic Cormorant, first seen last Thursday and re-found Saturday, continues through today, Wednesday at the Pueblo West Gravel Pit pond in Pueblo County.  Park at east side of Osprey Picnic area and walk with scope east to view the pond or park along Hwy 96 at Chain of Lakes Parking Lot and walk with scope west and cross Valco Bridge to view the pond.  Note a Colorado State Parks pass is required to park at either of these parking lots.  Quite a few decent photos have been taken of it and are on e-bird.  The bird seems to be on the Gravel Pit mostly during the morning, it has also been seen once in the afternoon/evening on the nearby Valco Ponds.  Good luck, this seems to be most viewable Neotropic Cormorant ever in Pueblo County.

Visitors:
A dozen or so on the trails. Half that visited the platform. One was interested in what we were doing.

Weather:
As last nights storm exited it left the morning with cold temps 1 C and haze on the horizons. Finally reached 8 C around 2 pm.

Raptor Observations:
Red-tails continue courtship displays although less dramatic than past weeks. Few flew directly over the ridge today. The traffic was heavy in the am on the Green Mountain side. Winds shifted for the afternoon and took most of the raptors across the west ridge and Cabrini. Birds increased between noon and 2pm.

Non-raptor Observations:
Solitaires actively singing. Many magpies. Many ravens enjoying a good soar.

Predictions:
Looks to be an active day. Might be high with increased thermal activity and rising air temps.

Dinosaur Ridge - Denver Field Ornithologists information may be found at: http://www.dfobirds.org
More information at hawkcount.org: [Site Profile] [Day Summary] [Month Summary]

Site Description
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is the
best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur Ridge may
be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged
Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see
resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to
migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and
Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern
Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes
Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White
Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome.
HawkWatch at Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM
to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left
into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the
southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through the
gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the ridge.

[cobirds] More on Finches

Birders,
After reviewing more photos of the finches I had this a.m., I'm not so sure of the Purple Finch ID.  I have a  photo of the female's beak and it looks pointed.  I never did see the streaking on the breast of the bird as it stayed in the tray.  I was basing my ID on the head pattern and nothing else as  I saw no other field marks.
Comments welcome.

[cobirds] Fire at Van's Grove, Bent County CO

Birders,

A fire began at 10:30 last night on US 50 eight miles east of Las Animas
CO, with the passage of a storm front. I read that the fire started
along US 50, moved south with north winds, was confined to a wet stream
bottom and and had jumped Bent County Road JJ, with only one structure
threatened. I figured it had to be close to Van's Grove, and that the
stream bottom was along Gageby Creek.

Sure enough, the fire went through legendary bird migrant trap Van's
Grove, burning a lot of trees and all of the undergrowth. There were
some parts of the grove that did not burn, although the prairie on all
sides, and Gageby Marsh did. It remains to be seen how bad the damage
is, but, for now, it looks pretty bad.

[cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk-Grandview Cemetery-Larimer County

All,

Stopped at Grandview Cemetery on the way home from work for a quick walk around.  Ran into David Wade and we spent 30 minutes watching birds zip quickly by in the steady breeze.  It seems as though the local Turkey Vultures have made it back.  I tallied 39 flying over the golf course just before I left.  But while walking with DWade, I had no sooner mentioned that we should keep our eyes open for Zone-tailed Hawks mixed in with the TVs than a Dark morph Broad-winged juvie flew over us.  I managed a couple of pictures.  They can be found in my Ebird checklist below.  This is the earliest Colorado record on Ebird.  Frankly, I'm surprised the bird was this far north in the state for an early record.  I'm guessing that the strong S/SW winds today may have had something to do with this bird's early arrival.  I would love to know where this bird started it's day and how far it had traveled before we got our eyes on it.  This was a striking looking bird.  Sometimes feel lucky that we are on the western end of their range where the Dark morph is always a possibility.

Observers:

Visitors:
I had 55 visitors to the platform today, with three conversations about hawkwatch.

Weather:
The skies were cloudless and the weather was warm. The early haze at the horizon was gone by 10:30 MST, when a west wind suddenly picked up to 5-6 BFT gusts.

Raptor Observations:
Migrating Raptors: ̢۬The high winds may have grounded the smaller raptors (plus the local perching birds). The COHA powered through the Hwy 93 valley at amazing speed and strength. ̢̢۬۬Non Migrating Raptors: ̢۬RTHA-3̢۬Although I was alone on the watch, from 12-2 MST the three local RTHAs kept me company with their very talented entertainment. They criss-crossed the ridge, doing roller coasters. And they faced into the wind, holding still and then elevatoring straight up with subtle flicks of the fingers and tail. They also flew above C-470, flying faster than the cars.

Non-raptor Observations:
A herd of ~20 Elk, BBMA-1, CORA-13 (group of 12 kettled north of the platform and headed farther north indirectly), TOSO-1, MOCH-3.

Predictions:
I could smell Greeley today, so you know what that means.

Hi CoBirders
I saw American Dipper  in Clear Creek this mourning on both sides of the Lowell Bridge. This is Adams County. I saw one visiting the nest in the retaining wall on the south side of Clear Creek, east of the bridge.

Can you you elaborate on those "checked boxes" you mention?

[cobirds] A goose trifecta - Akron -Washington County

On my way to try and find the greater prairie chickens (which didn't happen), I ran across 24 greater white-fronted geese, 120 snow geese, and 22 or so cackling geese in one of the farmer's fields on country road X around 7:30 am.  The cackling and greater white-fronted were mixed together right by the road, and the snow geese were just behind them a little further into the field.

[cobirds] Lagerman Res on a windy Sunday + E Kingbird

A blustery walk around Lagerman Reservoir today yielded about 20 Ruddy Ducks, a couple of Cinnamon Teal, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, about 6 Buffleheads, and about 20 Ring-necked Ducks. Both Osprey were present, as were the two Bald Eagles nesting to the south. A male Northern Harrier was hunting just west of the Osprey platform. The treat of the day was a FOS Eastern Kingbird holding its own in the wind on the south side of the reservoir.

Six people are seeing the Neotropic Cormorant at the Pueblo West Gravel Pit, Pueblo County.  Also, Long-tailed Duck and first year Lesser Black-backed Gull.

There has been a non-adult Neotropic Cormorant at the Pueblo West Gravel Pit, in Pueblo County first seen on 3/25 and seen again on 3/27.  Photos taken by several birders.  Seems to be around more in the mornings.  There are lots of Double-crested Cormorants coming in to this pond as well

Good birding,

I've seen a lot of hummingbird feeders out in my neighborhood in Douglas County.

Does anyone know when the first hummers start arriving and/or have you seen any yet this spring? If so where/at what elevation?

TIA!
