[cobirds] Bird walks at Carpenter Ranch, Routt County, Sat., 6/29

Hello, Birders.

Here's a sorta late announcement about two upcoming bird walks.

Saturday, 6/29. Meet at the Carpenter Ranch headquarters for a PROMPT 5am departure to the end of the Yampa River preserve and back. We will be walking on good, level, but potentially muddy trails, for ~8 miles. We'll be done by 11am. I'll be in the visitor parking area at 5am. And I'll be long gone by 5:01am.

Saturday 6/29. Meet at the Carpenter Ranch for bare-naked birding (binoculars prohibited) at 12 noon. We'll embark on a leisurely stroll of 1-2 hours with no binoculars.

Make a day of it, and join us for lunch (bring your own) at 11am.

Children, beginners, non-birders, etc. are abundantly welcome at both outings. Experts okay too.

The Carpenter Ranch in late June is fantastic:

And who needs binoculars?--

Any questions? Please email me or call my cell: 303-817-4233.

See you "bright" and early Saturday! Or late and leisurely. Whatever works for you.

[cobirds] Re: White-winged Crossbills, Boulder Co.

Paula and Maggie:

Great find!  Based on your report, I hiked the same trail this morning starting at 6:00 AM.  The flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was a bit scattered -- 1 near the campground, 12 about a quarter mile down the Arapaho Glacier Trail, and 8 about a mile down the Arapaho Glacier Trail.  The same stretch of trail had two AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS (one male, one female).

Afterwards, I continued along the Arapaho Glacier Trail for another 3 or so miles to the tundra.  Birding was mostly slow, but I found one snow patch with a nice assortment of tundra / rocky slope birds:

* White-Tailed Ptarmigans (2)
* Brown-Capped Rosy-Finches (4)
* Rock Wrens
* American Pipits
* Horned Larks
* Chipping Sparrow (tundra bird wannabe)

The snow patch was the highest one on the east facing slopes of the ridge line marked "Caribou 12310" on top maps, requiring a few hundred yards of off-trail walking, southward from the Arapaho Glacier Trail.

Note that I did not see or hear the White-Winged Crossbills during my hike back to the car late morning.  In general, bird activity had subsided quite a bit.  So, my recommendation for seeing the crossbills would be to get an early start, hoping that the birds will be as vocal as they were this morning.  The crossbills move around constantly, so some patience and some wandering back and forth along the trail might be required.

Thanks again for the report from two days ago.

[cobirds] RFI: technique for seeing Black Swifts at Zapata Falls

Trying for Black Swifts at Zapata Falls in San Luis Valley next week. Delayed lifer for me and a birding friend visiting next week.

Hoping that others can reply to me privately (jjones@jonestc.com) with the basic plan to see black swifts at this location. I have been to the falls in the daytime before, so I am familiar with the layout. Just looking for how to go about maximizing my opportunity for sightings. Things such as; do I just sit at the top of the falls pre-sunrise or post-sunset and await the birds to come diving in? Can you view nest sites from within the chasm?

Please reply privately unless you think your response has value to the rest of the group.

Thanks.
