Hey COBirders,
I think this is my first report of the season for Clear Spring Ranch. I've been banding since 8/2/25, but not much of note to report until today. The first three weeks it was pretty slow, with low numbers daily. I like to start in August to catch migrating Yellow Warblers that pretty much disappear after Labor Day. Not too many this fall. 80 so far, when I had about 180 this time last year. I had one today, but only 5 for September so far.
Also low in numbers are grosbeaks and buntings. I'm at about 1/3 the number of Laz's I had the last couple falls, and only 3 Blue Grosbeaks, no Black-headed. ????
Chipping Sparrows add much to my numbers early, too. This fall they too were slow in getting started, and most days I still only get a couple dozen, but two days, and today included I had a pile of them. 40 on one run, and 90 for the day, in the drizzle. Most continue to be hatch-year birds, by about 15 to 1 ration.
The last 10 days I've also started getting a lot more flycatchers, 1/2 of them juv W Wood Pewees, but also a few Dusky, Alder, Willow, and a Gray.
Today was the first rarity of the season, a gorgeous juv female Chestnut-sided Warbler, with that unique chartreuse-green cap.
Wilson's Warblers are coming in full throttle right now, and I have been getting around 10 each day, pre-dawn, then more as they filter down the creek all morning. 17 today, 90% hatch-year birds.
Unusual, the Com Yellowthroats are numerous everyday. 80 so far, about 120% of my best previous year - and I'll probably catch many more over the next 6 weeks! Must have been a good breeding season for them!
And my FOS Orange-crowned Warbler today - a HY F.
All-in-all, a pretty good day (127 birds netted) after a night Birdcast suggested might show a low migration number. I'm happy!
Happy Migration,
Steve Brown
